Alan Shearer was impressed with Newcastle United against Tottenham Hotspur, but leaves with a feeling of disappointment.

That is a feeling shared by the entire Toon Army, as Newcastle United drew 2-2 with Spurs despite leading twice.

It was a frustrating night for Eddie Howe’s side, who were largely dominant against Spurs. The only problem they had was finding the net, with the breakthrough eventually coming in the 71st minute.

Late HEARTBREAK 😫 Who was your Newcastle MOTM against Tottenham?👏🏻

Before that moment, Newcastle United had plenty of chances to take the lead. However, they were unable to capitalise on their domination.

That was the frustration for Alan Shearer, who has addressed Tuesday night’s draw at St James’ Park.

Alan Shearer left frustrated after strong Newcastle United performance

Shearer and Gary Lineker have discussed Newcastle’s draw with Spurs on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast.

The Newcastle United legend has shared his frustration at his former side not making their domination count after playing so well.

“But you were texting saying that Newcastle should be three up,” Lineker said.

“That was the disappointment tonight,” Shearer replied.

“I thought Newcastle played really well. There was an intensity about their game.

“Two full-backs again, I thought played really well. They limited Tottenham to very, very little in that first half, but they didn’t score. Lewis Miley had a good chance. Joelinton hit the post, one or two other bits.

“And you always worry when you have that much domination in the first half, and you don’t score, you think, okay. And he changed it, took Tonali off. I don’t know whether he got an injury or not at half time, but he took Tonali off and put Bruno Guimaraes on. And his performance second half was brilliant.”

More points thrown away, do Newcastle United have a mentality problem?😠

Bad feeling not being able to come away with the three points, especially right at the end of the match. We need to improve our mentality so that mistakes like this don’t happen again. On Saturday we have another opportunity at home, which we can’t afford to waste.

Newcastle United let Tottenham back into the game

The big frustration in the second half was that Newcastle United let Tottenham back into the game.

The Magpies’ game management was appalling, constantly handing the momentum to their opponents. Eddie Howe’s side were incredibly sloppy in possession, with Joelinton in particular guilty of not protecting the ball.

That allowed Spurs to put Newcastle under pressure, and it eventually resulted in them rescuing a point.

After the game, Bruno Guimaraes questioned Newcastle United’s mentality, and he was right to do that. Having dominated the game and taken the lead, they should have seen it out.

They were warned once when Spurs made it 1-1, but they did not heed that warning after Anthony Gordon put them back in front. Newcastle gave Spurs all the motivation they needed to salvage a point, and only have themselves to blame for the 95th minute disappointment.
