Spurs have overlooked their own young talent for too long now under a succession of managers.
De Zerbi's only mission upon joining last season was to keep Tottenham in the Premier League.
In the longer term, however, he will be tasked with getting some of the up-and-comers into Spurs' senior side.
Malachi Hardy is the latest player to be involved with the senior setup during pre-season.
That takes the tally of Under-21 eligible players with De Zerbi's senior squad up to eight.

Tottenham News reported on Spurs Under-21s' surprise loss to Ebbsfleet on Saturday.
That result can be partly explained by the fact it was the youngsters' first run-out of the summer, while National League side Ebbsfleet have played five times.
Beyond that, Spurs were also without 16 different players due to various reasons.
As pointed out by Lilywhite Rose on X, eight of them - Hardy being the latest - were instead with De Zerbi's squad.
Harry Byrne, Jamie Donley, Tye Hall, Will Lankshear, Ash Phillips, Luca Williams-Barnett and Rio Kyerematen are the others.
It is not unusual youngsters are asked to join up with the seniors during pre-season, of course, but hopefully one or two catch the eye and stick around.

One name not mentioned in that list above is a certain Mikey Moore.
Moore is still aged just 18, but he is in a different category now after spending last season on loan at Rangers.
The young attacker found things tough at Ibrox early on, but that soon changed and he was a big hit.
Rangers' campaign ended in disappointment, but Moore can be happy enough with his contribution.
It says it all that Rangers fans are eager for Moore to re-sign on loan, but Tottenham will surely have other ideas.
If Moore can find some rhythm during pre-season, there is every chance he will be a squad option for De Zerbi this coming campaign.
