There is an ‘expectation’ that former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou will be named as new Nottingham Forest manager this week following the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo.

The City Ground outfit parted ways with the ex-Wolves boss late on Monday night, with an official statement released by the club around midnight. It comes after the manager publicly revealed his relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis had deteriorated. He had started the season with a win over Brentford but drew with Crystal Palace and lost to West Ham United in his last two games.

According to The Telegraph, Postecoglou is the man in the frame to replace Nuno with an appointment expected as early as this week - as Forest prepare to take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium at 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers and former Chelsea and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho are mentioned as potential contenders but the report insists it is “understood that Marinakis’ preferred choice remains Postecoglou.”

Ange Postecoglou could get swift return to management after Tottenham sacking

Postecoglou led Spurs to Europa League success last season but their wretched Premier League form saw him sacked after the campaign had come to an end. The North London outfit finished 17th in the division but their victory in Europa League helped them secure Champions League football.

Thomas Frank was named as Postecoglou’s successor. A club statement at the time said: “ This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.”

On his departure, Postecoglou said in June: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride.

"The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.

"That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.”

Ange Postecoglou record against Arsenal as he’s tipped for Nottingham Forest job

The former Celtic boss was involved in four North London derbies against Arsenal during his time in charge at Spurs. He drew 2-2 in the first game at the Emirates Stadium. A Cristian Romero own goal put Arsenal ahead but Son Heung-min levelled before half-time.

Bukayo Saka put the Gunners back ahead from the penalty spot in he second half but Son scored a minute later to rescue a point for Spurs. That was Postecoglou’s only point against Arsenal, as he would lose his next three games against Mikel Arteta’s side.

They were beaten 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April 2024. They lost last season’s first meeting 1-0 at home before a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal back in January. Forest owner Marinkas wants a “more expansive” style of football and believes that Postecoglou can deliver that.

Forest have started the season with three games against London opposition - beating Brentford before drawing at Crystal Palace and losing at home to West Ham United. The aforementioned report adds that an appointment is “imminent” as Forest prepare for their visit to Arsenal.
