Gabriel turned from villain to hero as Arsenal closed the gap on leaders Liverpool to just two points with a last-gasp victory over Newcastle United at a stunned St James’ Park.
The Brazilian defender had cost his side with a poor decision to go to ground rather than challenge goalscorer Nick Woltemade in the air, as the German striker’s goal was the difference until the 84th minute. Mikel Merino and then Gabriel himself would have other ideas with dominant headed finishes to earn the Gunners all three points in a tough away trip.
Arsenal have had a challenging start to the season which has already included a trip to Anfield, a crunch clash with Manchester City and tough fixtures on paper against Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, in addition to a home game against newly-promoted Leeds United.
Having come through that start to the season in second place with 13 points from 18, the Gunners’ upcoming fixtures offer optimism that things could be set to only improve from here. Their rivals at the top of the Premier League may have something to say about that, though.
Arsenal’s next six Premier League fixtures compared to rivals
Next up for the Gunners in the league is a seemingly-straightforward game at home to struggling West Ham United. This may be more challenging than it appears, though, as it will be new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s first game at the helm and the Hammers have won on their last two visits to the Emirates. In fact, the last time the home team won a Premier League fixture between these two sides was back in 2022.
Following this, Arsenal have two more London derbies to contend against Fulham (A) and high-flying Crystal Palace (H), before consecutive away trips to newly-promoted Burnley and Sunderland and a massive North London derby at home to Tottenham Hotspur. The Gunners may believe that they have a favourable set of fixtures compared with their title rivals.
As for leaders Liverpool, a tough test awaits as they head to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea next up. Though the Blues are off the back of a shocking 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton, there is no doubt they will be up for it against Arne Slot’s men.
Following that is the North West derby against Manchester United at Anfield. Liverpool have only lost two of their last 18 league encounters with the Red Devils, but this is a fixture in which anything can happen - and United have left Anfield with a point in each of the last two seasons. Brentford away is after this for the Reds, with home matches against Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest sandwiched in between a mouth-watering clash with Manchester City at the Etihad.
As for City themselves, they travel to Brentford next before hosting Everton at the Etihad. Away fixtures at Aston Villa and Newcastle approach, in addition to a home game against Bournemouth and that massive encounter with Liverpool on November 9.
Arsenal’s bitter north London rivals Tottenham sit just two points behind their rivals in fourth place, with a trip to Leeds United next up before Aston Villa visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Everton (A) follows that, before a tough November run consisting of home games against Chelsea and Man United ahead of November 23rd’s North London derby at the Emirates.
