Eveliina Summanen will be hoping to continue her strong Women’s Super League record against Aston Villa when we make the trip to Villa Park on Sunday (kick-off 12pm UK).
Fresh from signing a new, long-term contract this week, the midfielder has produced six goal involvements (four goals and two assists) in 10 appearances against the Villans in all competitions, with three of those goals coming in the Women’s Super League.
Two of those three strikes came in a superb brace in our 3-3 draw in April, 2023, while the other was netted in our 2-2 stalemate at Villa Park last term, where the Finland international converted from the penalty spot.
Away from WSL action, Eveliina also found the back of the net against Villa in the Women’s League Cup last term – a 40-yard stunner into the top corner to earn us a 1-0 win at Brisbane Road, a goal that was rightly named our Goal of the Season for 2024/25 campaign.
We tasted success in the reverse fixture earlier this season, but it involved plenty of late drama at Brisbane Road. Kirsty Hanson handed Villa the lead six minutes from time, despite being down to ten, but goals from Bethany England and Olivia Holdt staged a dramatic comeback and secure a 2-1 win.
Following last weekend’s defeat to Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, we’ll be looking to return to winning ways this weekend and, if we can pick up three points on the road, it would only be the third time we have won four games away from home in a single WSL campaign, doing so in 2021/22 and 2023/24.
Meanwhile, keep an eye on Julie Blakstad, as, since making her debut at Liverpool last month, the Norway international has created the most chances from open play (five), made the second most interceptions (five) and had the third most touches in the opposition box (10) than any other player from our squad.
