Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham could be beaten to the signing of England international Angel Gomes this summer by Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.
The 24-year-old is coming to the end of his contract with Lille and is not expected to sign a new deal with the club. Gomes, who made his Three Lions debut last year, had been widely reported to have his heart set on a return to the Premier League.
The midfielder is a product of the Manchester United youth academy but only ever made 10 first team appearances for the Red Devils before joining Lille in 2020. Gomes has worked hard on his game in France, playing 134 times for the side, and worked his way into an England call-up under Lee Carsley in August 2024.
Marseille make contract offer to England international
Spurs and West Ham had emerged as frontrunners to sign Gomes on a free transfer. Since those reports first surfaced, it had been claimed that the Hammers had already been dealt a fatal setback in their negotiations.
West Ham boss Graham Potter was reported to have made a personal call to Gomes amid fears that he was not interested in joining the club. Claret & Hugh claimed that attempt had ‘fallen on deaf ears’ with Spurs seemingly in pole position - Fulham and Crystal Palace were also named as interested clubs in that report.
However, it now appears that a return to the Premier League is far from guaranteed. A fresh report in French outlet L’Equipe suggests that Marseille are hell-bent on bringing Gomes to the south of France.
The outlet claims that Marseille, who could offer Gomes the chance of Champions League football depending on their Ligue 1 finish, are already ‘very active’ in brokering deals ahead of the summer transfer window. It’s claimed that the club has been in talks with Gomes ‘for weeks’ and have ‘accelerated’ negotiations by offering the player a contract.
Angel Gomes ‘aware’ of Spurs and West Ham transfer talk
Speaking about Gomes in September, following his call-up to the England squad, caretaker Three Lions boss Lee Carsley said: “Angel is someone who does it week-in, week-out for a team out in France. He is probably different to what we’ve seen in the past in terms of the central midfielder that is a little bit more physical, more robust.
“Angel is very technical, he controls the game with his skill and technique. He is very determined, has an excellent attitude, loves football and technically and tactically he is excellent.”
Addressing his future, as quoted by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Gomes said: "I'm aware of clubs enquiring about my situation, but I'm now completely focused on Lille. I want to finish the season in the best way possible, and then we will see what happens. I'm focused on the present and not on negotiations."
