Crystal Palace are set to face serious competition from Premier League rivals AFC Bournemouth over a potential January transfer move for Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson.

The Welsh international had emerged as one of the Eagles’ top targets this week. Johnson is struggling for a regular place in the starting XI under Thomas Frank and hasn’t scored in the Premier League since the second fixture of the season.

Spurs are expected to be busy in January with outgoings necessary in order to make space for new faces to help Frank find consistency in north London. Given his irregular minutes, Johnson is one of those who could make way.

Crystal Palace face competition for Brennan Johnson transfer

News Shopper reporter Bobby Manzi claims that sources have indicated that Crystal Palace are ‘keen’ to bring Johnson across London with adding attacking impetus a ‘matter of urgency’ at Selhurst Park. A £35 million fee is touted with Spurs having paid £47.5 million to sign the player from Nottingham Forest in 2023.

Johnson is the type of player who could slot into Oliver Glasner’s system behind Jean-Philippe Mateta but the Eagles will face competition from AFC Bournemouth to land that deal. The Cherries are preparing for life without Antoine Semenyo.

The Bournemouth star man has a £60 million release clause in his contract, which is expected to be activated in January with Manchester City, Liverpool and Spurs all monitoring a deal. Transfer specialist Graeme Bailey reports that the Cherries could look to use Spurs’ interest in Semenyo as part of a deal which would see Johnson come the other way.

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank ‘aware’ of Johnson qualities

Missing out on the winger would be a blow for Oliver Glasner, who has been outspoken about a lack of backing during the summer transfer window. Speaking about the upcoming window this week, Glasner said: “We started to talk about this weeks ago. If we start now, it is too late. Everything is already on track, and it's just to get the deals done. We know this, the club knows this, the board knows this.”

Crystal Palace lost creativity and attacking impetus this summer when Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal late in the window for £67.5 million. The Eagles did splurge on Villarreal man Yeremy Pino but the Spaniard is still finding his feet in the Premier League.

Speaking about Johnson last month, Spurs boss Frank said: I'm very aware that Brennan's got some very good qualities. One of them is scoring goals and running in behind and arriving in the box. I really like everything about him. He also scored goals this year as well. Four, I think, in total. So I'm very aware of them.

"So it's all about how you create that team, where we perform, how we get the best players in, where do we play them. Is it Mo to the right, is it Brennan? Who plays the 10? What kind of player do we play in a different position to make it click?”
