The CB has been one of the most improved players under Roberto De Zerbi.

Roberto De Zerbi’s impact since his arrival at Tottenham Hotspur has been well documented.

Spurs were heading only in one direction under former interim boss Igor Tudor. However, since Roberto De Zerbi replaced Tudor in March, the North Londoners’ fortunes have changed. The Lilywhites are in the driver’s seat to clinch Premier League status heading into the final day of the season, finding themselves two points ahead of relegation rivals West Ham.

One of the reasons behind Tottenham’s turnaround is the form of Micky van de Ven. The Netherlands international had started the campaign strongly, emerging as one of the most consistent performers until the end of 2025. Since the turn of the year, the central defender has surprisingly lost his form. He began making silly mistakes and lost concentration several times in crucial situations.

However, since De Zerbi walked into the club, Micky van de Ven has regained his form. The 25-year-old has been quite solid and one of the key players in helping Spurs get closer to safety in the Premier League.

Roberto De Zerbi makes an interesting admission about Micky van de Ven

Ahead of Tottenham’s relegation-decider against Everton at home, De Zerbi heaped praise on Van de Ven, who has done a good job as a stand-in captain in Cristian Romero’s injury absence.

“I think he is the best centre back in the Premier League,” De Zerbi said in his press conference (h/t ESPN FC).

“We talk a lot of time because I think he suffered maybe too much for the situation of Tottenham this season. He’s a sensitive guy, he’s a good guy, and in my time, I think he played amazingly.

“And for that, I’d answer he’s the best centre-back, left centre, in the Premier League.”

De Zerbi’s words on Van de Ven shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. When fully fit and running, the Dutchman is undoubtedly one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. The 25-year-old’s reading of the game, passing ability, pace and energy to cover large spaces make him an invaluable asset to the Lilywhites.

Plus, when clubs such as Barcelona, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Real Madrid are all keeping tabs on the same defender, it speaks volumes about Van de Ven’s talent and potential. Unfortunately, Sunday’s game against Everton may turn out to be Van de Ven’s last in a Tottenham shirt. If the unthinkable happens, the Netherlands star will certainly depart N17.

Should De Zerbi’s side manage to get the desired point vs. Everton and stay afloat in the top flight, the onus will be on the club bosses to convince Van de Ven to stay in North London for another year.
