Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have reached an agreement with Manchester City owners City Football Group over the transfer of 22-year-old Alejo Veliz.

The striker signed for Spurs from Rosario Central in August 2023 on a £13 million move but has never broken into the first team at the London outfit. Veliz has made eight appearances for the first team but has spent the majority of his time since the transfer on loan.

Veliz is currently on loan back at Argentine side Rosario Central for the 2025/26 campaign, having previously been shipped out to Sevilla and Espanyol. His eight Tottenham appearances came as Premier League cameos during the 2023/24 season and included a goal against Brighton in a 4-2 defeat.

Tottenham Hotspur reach deal with City Football Group

GiveMeSport cite reports from Brazilian outlet UOL claiming that the fee agreed between Spurs and the City Football Group is ‘quite high’. The City Football Group own clubs across the world including Palermo, Troyes, Melbourne City, Girona and Yokohama F. Marinos.

It’s claimed that an ‘agreement in principle’ has been reached with Tottenham to sign Veliz with the London outfit expected to cancel his loan at Rosario Central to push through the transfer. The report adds that it is ‘unclear’ how City Football Group plan on using Veliz and which club he will end up - as well as whether the player wants to see his loan in Argentina cancelled.

However, another report from journalist Cesar Luis Merlo suggests that Brazilian club Bahia is the planned destination for Veliz. Bahia was bought by City Football Group in December 2022 and a move for the striker to the outfit would seem to align with reports of the agreement reached. Bahia finished the Serie A season seventh in the division last term.

Ange Postecoglou - Veliz is ‘a real number nine’

Veliz signed a six-year deal when joining Tottenham in 2023 and was highly rated at the time of his arrival. Speaking about the player shortly after his arrival, former Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said: “To be fair to him, he’s only had one week of training. He had two sessions last week. We gave him game time for the U21s and he’s now had a full week of training. It’s great to have him on board but there’s no expectation on him.

“We need to let him settle and get him training more consistently and get him a game or two more for the U21s, but we’ve been really encouraged about how he has gone about things and watching him other night, he showed attributes, he has great movement and is a real number nine.”

He also turned heads on loan at Espanyol at times, with former manager Manolo Gonzalez predicted big things for the forward following a last minute winner against Rayo Vallecano early in his loan spell.

Gonzalez said: “He has a great future in European football. He is very young and he has to go through a toll that we all have to go through. He will continue to grow and every day we will see a better player.”
