Tottenham Hotspur winger Yang Min-hyeok has had a busy Tuesday in the January transfer window, having been recalled from his loan spell at Portsmouth and a deal already agreed to send him out to promotion-chasing Coventry City.
The highly-rated 19-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for Spurs but was part of the pre-season preparations under Thomas Frank. Tottenham Hotspur agreed a deal to sign the teenager in July 2024 with the player only arriving in the UK in January 2025.
Yang spent the back end of last season on loan with QPR in the Championship and then headed out to Portsmouth for this season. The forward has made 15 second tier appearances for Pompey but struggled to nail down a role in the starting XI.
Tottenham Hotspur recall Yang-min Hyeok
The South Korean did score against Watford and Middlesbrough in October, as well as against Charlton Athletic at the end of December. That goal against the Addicks was a 98th minute winner in a 2-1 victory, with Portsmouth having conceded just two minutes prior in injury time.
It was the kind of moment that Yang proved himself capable of in the K-League. Rating his performance from the bench an 8/10 in that match, our sister site The News wrote: “Was limited with opportunities when he came but was bright on the left wing. Hero at the death with a brilliant last-minute effort to claim the winner for the Blues.”
It’s been reported that Spurs were not happy with the lack of game time for Yang at Fratton Park, hence the recall. He is now set to join Frank Lampard’s promotion push at Coventry City, where more minutes have been promised.
Coventry City to sign Real Madrid linked winger
The Sky Blues have taken the Championship by storm this season and sit top of the table, six points clear of Middlesbrough in second place. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano wrote: “Yang Min-hyeok, set to join Coventry on loan from Tottenham as deal has been agreed today.”
Real Madrid had even been credited with interest in the winger in recent weeks, speculation which Pompey boss John Mousinho acknowledged. Speaking last month, prior to the recall, Mousinho said: “I’ve heard the story [about Real Madrid], but there’s nothing I have heard from Tottenham or Real Madrid.
“I think Min-hyeok will be here for the rest of the season. Spurs have a recall, as most of these loan contracts. Spurs have a recall if they want to recall him. I think he’s been a really bright spark in a lot of the performances we’ve had, particularly in the early part of the season.
“At times you have probably seen what you can sometimes expect from young players, but, as a 19-year-old coming into a struggling side, he has done very well. He will be staying until the end of the season.”
