Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly chasing Gençlerbirliği SK’s Ousmane Diabaté ahead of the summer.
The 18-year-old arrived at the Süper Lig side on a free transfer in the last window, after a spell at Guinean side Académie SOAR.
He started with their U19s before getting opportunities with their first team, playing 397 minutes from seven matches.
The defensive midfielder has only made a handful of appearances but has still caught Tottenham’s attention.
Tottenham already sent officials
That’s according to Africa Foot, who cover the latest on the Premier League side’s interest in the youngster.
Spurs have closely monitored Ousmane Diabaté and even sent scouts to watch him live.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side held initial talks with his representative and then sent their official to Turkey last weekend. He played 24 minutes in his side’s 3-0 win over Trabzonspor.
The Guinean’s attracting interest from clubs from various leagues, but Tottenham Hotspur interest is strong and they view him as a bet for the future.
Spurs also held talks with Gençlerbirliği, who won’t oppose a sale if there’s a convincing offer. There’s no mention of the Turkish club’s request.
Entourage in favour of Tottenham move
An unnamed member of Ousmane Diabaté’s entourage told Africa Foot that Tottenham Hotspur are determined to sign him.
“This also explains the growing interest from Tottenham, as well as that of other European clubs. But the English club seems particularly determined to sign Ousmane Diabaté. We were delighted to see Tottenham travel to watch him play,” a member of his entourage said.
“This means a lot to us. Discussions with the London club are ongoing, and we hope to reach a positive agreement. For now, Tottenham is still in a phase of observing and monitoring the player.”
Our take: Guinean cheap option for Spurs
Roberto De Zerbi has Rodrigo Bentancur, João Palhinha [on loan from Bayern Munich] and Yves Bissouma as the three defensive midfielders in the squad.
Galatasaray failed to sign Bissouma in the winter market and could return for him in the summer. His contract expires in June and he’s likely to leave the north London club as a free agent.
Taking this into account, Tottenham Hotspur could bring in a new defensive midfielder. This is where Ousmane Diabaté can be a good option as he shouldn’t cost a lot in the next window.
