Djed Spence has been one of Tottenham Hotspur’s best starters to the new campaign with solid performances against PSG and Burnley.
Recently, Spence signed a new contract, which was a reward for his impressive form over the past year, in what has been an incredible turnaround at Spurs.
This time last year, Spence was linked with a move to Genoa, however, the Italian club opted not to take up their option to make his loan move permanent.
But now the defender is a crucial player in Thomas Frank’s squad, and his recent performances could even earn him an England call-up.
Mohammed Kudus versus Djed Spence in Tottenham training
Djed Spence has been poking fun at Tottenham’s new £55m signing, Mohammed Kudus, by claiming that the winger failed to beat him once out of ten attempts in training.
Kudus looked so good against Burnley with two assists for Richarlison, but against Spurs’ defender, he couldn’t get past him in training.
Getting past Spence is tough, as Bukayo Saka and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia recently found out, with Kudus now learning how tough it is.
Mikey Moore claimed that Spence is Micky van de Ven-level fast, so finding a way to get past the full-back is very tough.
In the UEFA Super Cup against one of Europe’s best attackers, Kvaratskhelia, the 25-year-old looked impossible to beat in one-versus-one situations.
He did not get dribbled past once during the match, made two tackles and won four of his seven duels against the European champions.
Spence is Spurs’ first choice left-back option with Destiny Udogie still sidelined with an injury, but right now, the England star is doing the business.
Djed Spence on signing his new Tottenham contract
It has been quite a journey for Spence to sign this new contract at the club following loan spells in France, Italy and the Championship.
But he is now quickly establishing himself as one of the best full-backs in the country and Spurs fans are buzzing that he’s committed his future.
“I just want to keep playing well and reach higher levels. I think everyone has trials and tribulations, but I am a fighter, so I always work hard and try to do my best.
“It’s been a rollercoaster ride, but I’ve been resilient, now faster forward, and I’m here playing and I’m happy.”
