Liverpool have reportedly added Djed Spence to their list of potential defensive reinforcements this summer, with the Reds keeping tabs on the versatile full-back as Andoni Iraola looks to bolster his backline options.
Spence made 23 Premier League appearances for Tottenham last season, adding eight in the Champions League as he became a regular fixture.
His versatility across both full-back positions has been central to his appeal, having filled in comfortably on the left as well as his more natural right-hand side.
That flexibility took him all the way to the 2026 World Cup, where he earned a surprise call-up to Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad after Trent Alexander-Arnold fell out of favour.
And it appears that the interest is legitimate.
Speaking on the Last Word On Spurs YouTube channel, Daily Mirror journalist and Sports Journalist Association president Darren Lewis said of Liverpool’s interest in Djed Spence:
“I’m not surprised that Liverpool like him because he is very versatile, he can play on the left side as well as the right side. He would compete for a place with [Jeremie] Frimpong.”
“Looking at the Gakpo potential deal, Liverpool have said ‘yeah you can have him, but we want Spence’. And £30-35 million will change hands.”
He added:
“I think a deal is there to be done because Spence will definitely want to go [to Liverpool]. I would be staggered come the end of the window and he is still a Tottenham player.”
“If Liverpool follow up their interest with a bid, I think he would want to go.”
With Spurs reportedly open to cashing in and Liverpool needing bodies at full-back, Iraola’s concerns over defensive depth could push the Reds to finally make their long-standing interest in Spence concrete.
Liverpool have lacked a consistent right-back since Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure. Joe Gomez and Dominik Szoboszlai filled the role for much of last season, but the Hungarian is needed in midfield rather than defence.
