This transfer window has moved more quickly and seen more sudden twists and turns than perhaps any other in recent memory – and to help keep you in the loop with everything that’s going on, we’re back with our latest round-up and review of some of the biggest new Premier League transfer rumours, starting with a story for fans of Everton and Manchester City.
The Daily Mail claim that Everton are eyeing a “shock move” for Manchester City defender Nathan Aké, with the 30-year-old having “emerged as a target” after Pep Guardiola told the media that he wanted to work with a small squad and hoped to see some sales before the transfer deadline.
David Moyes is apparently “desperate” for some defensive reinforcements in the wake of an injury to Jarrad Branthwaite, while the arrival of Rayan Aït-Nouri at the Etihad has “opened up” the possibility that Aké is moved on.
There is no word on how much Manchester City might demand for the Dutchman and nor are there any details of how far along negotiations might be – or, indeed, if there are any as yet.
The 3AM Verdict: There’s far too little detail here for us to know whether Everton are seriously considering a formal bid or whether Aké himself would be interested in the move. He’s currently earning £160,000 per week and has two years left on his contract, so it wouldn’t be a budget-friendly move for Everton by any means – but they definitely need at least one new defender and ideally two, so it’s very possible that this is an option for them.
Spurs target ‘impossible’ transfer after Eze deal collapses
With the sudden collapse of Tottenham Hotspur’s bid for Eberechi Eze yesterday, Spurs have been left hunting for alternatives – and Caught Offside are one of a number of media outlets suggesting that they may now try to sign Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers.
A bid for the England international has been “discussed internally”, apparently, but Villa are desperate to hang on to one of their star players and a deal is said to be “almost impossible” to strike – but it may be that they give it an optimistic crack anyway.
Should that move fail to advance, then Southampton’s Tyler Dibling, who was linked with a move to Spurs back in January, could be a more realistic alternative, and they are said to have made “fresh enquiries” about the young attacking midfielder.
The 3AM Verdict: It has been clear all summer that Rogers, a player that Cheslea have been linked with too, is not for sale and that it would take a quite incredible sum to make Villa think about letting him leave – we just don’t see it happening this summer. Dibling is rather more realistic, and we’ve seen stories connecting Spurs with AS Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche as well. They’re ones to watch, but we doubt a deal for Rogers goes anywhere.
Manchester United ‘give up’ on midfielder dream
Once it became clear to Manchester United that they were unlikely to get a deal for Carlos Baleba over the line this summer, many media outlets reported that they turned their attention to Sporting’s Morten Hjulmand instead – but now Sport Witness suspect that a deal for the Dane is dead in the water.
Apparently, sections of the Portuguese media report that although United “made an approach” in recent days, it was “blocked” by Sporting’s club president, who is “refusing to release [Hjulmand] to Manchester United or anyone else.” Juventus had also been alleged to be interested.
Due to his former club’s stance, head coach Ruben Amorim “gives up” on the chances of getting a deal over the line, and the Red Devils will now “consider other targets.”
The 3AM Verdict: Sporting ultimately remain a selling side, even if they’re not desperate for cash this summer, so we suspect that there’s a fee which would get a deal for Hjulmand done – it’s a question of whether United are willing or able to pay it. We think we won’t have the full picture until after they’ve finalised a few sales of players such as Alejandro Garnacho. Then, they’ll be in a position to make some formal offers and we’ll know who is and who isn’t a serious option.
