Former Tottenham Hotspur interim manager Ryan Mason is once again available in the job market having been sacked by Championship side West Brom on Tuesday morning.
The Baggies suffered a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on Monday, their 10th in a row away from the Hawthorns. That left West Brom 18th in the table and 10 points off the play-off places.
Mason’s last win with the side came over London outfit QPR in the Midlands on December 29. The 34-year-old left his role among the Tottenham Hotspur coaching staff to take charge at West Brom last summer.
Ryan Mason sacked by West Brom
The former midfielder had signed a three-year deal with the second tier side but has struggled to meet the brief of challenging for promotion. Mason had won three of his first four Championship matches but only managed six more wins in 22 outings since then.
A West Brom statement read: “West Bromwich Albion have today parted company with men’s first team Head Coach Ryan Mason. Assistant Head Coach Nigel Gibbs and First Team Coach/Head of Performance Sam Pooley have also departed The Hawthorns.
“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Ryan, Nigel and Sam for their efforts and wishes all three the very best for the future. First Team Coach James Morrison will oversee first-team affairs on an interim basis until a new staff is appointed. The process of recruiting a new men’s first team Head Coach and staff is under way.”
Ex Spurs midfielder’s two interim Tottenham Hotspur stints
Mason made 70 appearances for Spurs as a player and eventually joined the coaching staff, taking interim charge of the first team in 2021 and 2023. His first stint came following the sacking of Jose Mourinho and the second was while Antonio Conte dealt with health issues.
During his first stint, Mason became the youngest Premier League manager at 29 years old and helped the team secure Conference League football, finishing above Arsenal. The coach’s 2023 period included a famous comeback to draw 2-2 with Manchester United.
Speaking after that game, Mason said: "Big character, big personalities, stuck together, kept believing and acted as a team throughout the whole game. That pleases me after what happened at the weekend because we probably didn't have that as a group.
"And off the back of how the first half went in terms of the scoreline, to go out at half time and stick together, fight for each other and really got our fans involved, I thought they helped us massively, and it's pleasing. It proves a lot to me what I already thought about this group but to see that on the pitch is a good feeling."
Thomas Frank remains under pressure at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but is backed by the board for now with investment coming in the January window. Recent draws against Brentford and Sunderland have lacked the type of character that Mason found in the squad two years ago.
