Ex Tottenham Hotspur and Everton midfielder Dele Alli has returned to North London to train with Spurs as he pushes for a free transfer and a fresh footballing start.

The 29-year-old is determined to revive his career having seen his contract with Serie A outfit Como terminated in September. Alli spent one year in Italy but made just one appearance under Cesc Fabregas.

Alli has been permitted to use the facilities at Spurs’ Hotspur Way to maintain his condition as he searches for a new club, but is not training with Igor Tudor and the Tottenham first team.

The midfielder had posted a photo of himself at the training ground on social media with the club then confirming that Alli had been granted use of the academy pitch. The former England international has not played in the UK since representing Everton in 2022.

Alli moved to Merseyside from Spurs in January 2022 on a free transfer. The Toffees would have been obligated to pay Tottenham up to £40 million for Alli if certain performance criteria had been met but the midfielder only ever played 13 times for Everton.

In a seven year stint on the books at Spurs, the player made 269 appearances for the club, scoring 67 goals and picking up 59 assists. Alli won the PFA Young Player of the Year in both 2016 and 2017.

The midfielder’s career began to stutter following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino from Spurs, with Alli also opening up on the effect that childhood trauma had on his playing career.

Alli’s most recent stint at Como saw the former Spurs star make just one appearance, coming against AC Milan at the San Siro. The cameo from the bench lasted just nine minutes before the midfielder was shown a red card. Alli continued to make the bench after suspension but was not handed minutes again.

The MK Dons academy graduate was in attendance for the North London derby last month and spoke to the fans on the pitch at half time. He said: “I can’t wait to get back on the pitch playing, hopefully it won’t be too long now.

“I hope you’ve missed me as much as I’ve missed you. A lot has happened in our journeys since we were last together but I’m back today and I hope you know that you’ll always be my family.”
