The 20-year-old central midfielder was drafted in for his first start of the tournament after featuring as a substitute in all three of his nation’s group stage matches.

But it was a tough outing for the whole Swedish side as France produced a dominant display with three superb goals to run out 3-0 winners in New York, booking a date with Paraguay in the round of 16.

Kylian Mbappe and Bradley Barcola netted either side of half-time before Mbappe doubled his tally 16 minutes from the end to set the seal on a superb victory for Didier Deschamps’ men.

Lucas was substituted as part of a double change by Sweden boss Graham Potter on 66 minutes with the score at 2-0.

The midfielder’s exit from the competition follows that of Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke with the Netherlands in the early hours of Tuesday morning, leaving us with seven players remaining in the tournament.
