Tottenham are said to be considering loaning out one of their first-team stars as Thomas Frank continues to shape his squad in the January transfer window. Frank decided to axe Brennan Johnson within days of the window opening, with Spurs striking a £35million deal with Crystal Palace and taking a loss of around £13million on their 2023 investment.
Spurs are expected to add attacking reinforcements, and it seems the attacking exits won’t end with Johnson. According to a fresh report, Tottenham are now looking to send one of their forwards out on loan.
Mathys Tel has struggled for game time under Frank this season, and he was even left out of the Champions League squad early in the season. Tel has made 15 appearances across all competitions, but he has only started three Premier League games.
After Tel scored earlier in the season, Frank was complimentary of the winger, saying: “I'm so happy. I got emotional almost after the game because he's a young man who has a strong character and trains well every day.
“Even though he hasn’t played as much, and then I play him as a striker - crazy thoughts by the Head Coach, because maybe he’s better to the left, he can also play there, of course… he’s not involved in the Champions League squad, he just came back.
“The way he scored against West Ham was solid, good. But that’s one game, then the next one, Doncaster, better, arriving in the right areas, yes, he didn't score, but the first thing is to arrive and the link up play, work hard. Then the third game, get the goal, great finish, I know the little deflection, but it’s a great connection, arriving in the right areas, working hard. I’m just so happy, all the praise.”
Tel could depart
Despite some positive comments from Frank, it’s reported that Spurs are now listening to loan offers for Tel for the second half of the season. The winger was signed for more than £30million from Bayern Munich at the end of a loan deal last season, but at 20 years of age, it seems Spurs feel as though the player has more developing to do, and he needs regular football to do it.
Yeni Akit has reported that Galatasaray could be an option for Tel, reportedly liking how versatile Tel is. One would think Frank will want to see a player come in before any Tel exit is confirmed, given Johnson has already left.
