Arsenal have made many big signings over the years.
The Gunners have been spending big money since Arsene Wenger’s departure, and in that time, they have broken their transfer record twice.
The likes of Nicolas Pepe and Declan Rice are the names that spring to mind when you’re talking about big signings, but there was once a signing who cost nothing but was still the biggest ever.
Yes, we’re talking about Sol Campbell.
Be honest: Have you ever seen a more shocking transfer in football than Sol Campbell joining Arsenal?
Gary Neville says Sol Campbell joining Arsenal was the most shocking signing he has ever seen
Arsenal shocked the world by signing Campbell from Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer in the summer of 2001.
The Englishman was the captain of Spurs at the time and was among the best centre-backs in the Premier League and perhaps even the world.
Campbell revealed that Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Inter Milan and Barcelona were all interested in him, while Tottenham were desperate to keep him.
In fact, the defender even publicly announced that he would stay at Spurs, but just a few weeks later, he was holding up the Arsenal shirt in his unveiling.

That shocked everyone, even Gary Neville.
While discussing the most shocking transfers ever, the Manchester United legend said on Stick to Football: “Sol’s the biggest transfer I think I’ve ever seen, in shocks. In shocks, it was massive.”
Ian Wright and Wayne Rooney agreed, but Roy Keane chose Eric Cantona’s move from Leeds United to Manchester United instead.
However, for once, we’ll agree with Neville here. No transfer in Premier League history was more shocking than Arsenal signing Campbell from their biggest rivals.
Imagine Tottenham get relegated and you could sign one of their players for Arsenal, who would you pick and why?
Should Arsenal look to sign a Tottenham player if Spurs get relegated?
Tottenham are currently 17th in the Premier League table and just one point above the relegation zone.
There are just seven games left to be played, and if there is no rapid improvement, Spurs could go down to the Championship.
If they do get relegated, most of their players will want to leave the club, and they could be available for a below-market fee as well.
Should Arsenal consider making a move for any of their players? We don’t think so.
Don’t get us wrong, we would love to see another Campbell-like transfer, but there isn’t a single player at Tottenham who is good enough to get anywhere near our starting line-up.
