Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur striker Timo Werner has agreed a deal to take his career to the MLS with San Jose Earthquakes this January.
The 29-year-old has only played 13 minutes for RB Leipzig this season in yet another difficult campaign for the striker, who has been branded a flop following stints in the Premier League. Werner made 87 appearances in the top flight during his time at Chelsea and Spurs.
The German initially joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan in January 2024 before seeing that move extended for another campaign over the 2024/25 season. Werner only scored three goals in 41 outings for Spurs.
Ex Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur striker set for MLS move
The forward previously spent two years at Chelsea, where he was more prolific, registering 23 goals and 21 assists. Despite that return, Werner never truly made a role in the Chelsea starting XI his own.
The forward, who was part of Spurs’ Europa League winning squad last season, last managed a goal contribution when picking up an assist for Tottenham against Fulham in December 2024. A last goal came in October 2024.
Providing the latest on Werner’s future, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano took to social media platform X and wrote: “Timo Werner to San Jose Earthquakes, here we go! Deal in place for the German striker to try new chapter in MLS.
“Werner leaves Leipzig and will sign at San Jose in the next days after verbal agreement reached today, as @tombogert reports. It will be a permanent deal.”
Werner criticised by Ange Postecoglou during time at Spurs
In December 2024, former Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou labelled Werner’s performance in a 1-1 draw with Rangers as ‘unacceptable’. The forward was taken off at half-time in that Europa League fixture.
The BBC reported that Werner lost possession 16 times and only completed 69% of his passes. Speaking after the match, Postecoglou said: "When you've got 18-year-olds [in the squad], it [that performance] is not acceptable to me. I said that to Timo, he's a German international.
"In the moment we're in right now - it's not like we've got many options - I need everyone to at least be going out there and trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn't acceptable.
"We need everybody, including him, to be contributing because we don't have the depth to leave people out if they perform poorly. I expect a level of performance from some of the senior guys, and tonight wasn't that."
In other news, Frank's Tottenham win percentage compared to Postecoglou, Pochettino and others as pressure builds.
