Tottenham supporters have already had an emotional summer. Not long after securing a historic Europa League title triumph, Tottenham fired the manager responsible for bringing that trophy home, as they unceremoniously dumped Ange Postecoglou on a Friday night after getting everyone's hopes up that he'd be staying after all.
Postecoglou was very popular in the locker room, so his sacking was not taken kindly by the players. But all of that drama has already died down thanks to the optimism of new hire Thomas Frank. However, the recent peace could give way to more grief, as a Tottenham legend could indeed soon follow Postecoglou out the door.
Although Frank seems to have Cristian Romero sewn up as a key player who will stay despite the transfer rumors, it appears he hasn't taken the same view of captain Son Heung-min.
Thomas Frank has made his choice
According to a report from TBR Football's Graeme Bailey and Jamie Brown, Tottenham manager Thomas Frank is willing to let Son Heung-min go this summer. There was initially uncertainty regarding Son's status at Spurs and an understanding that the ball was in the club legend's court, but it appears that if it were up to Frank, he'd move on from Son to start a new era at the club in the attack.
Now that doesn't necessarily mean that Son is guaranteed to go or that Tottenham are pushing him out. It just means that if Son wants to leave, Frank won't stand in his way. More than that, it means Frank doesn't really see Son as part of his plans and has his eye towards the future, which is understandable, even if it hurts Tottenham supporters.
Son will be 33 when the 2025/26 season begins, and while Tottenham would benefit greatly from his experience and the fact that he still tied the team lead in Premier League goal contributions despite being in a down year with injuries, Spurs do need to move on at some point. And maybe Frank is high enough on Mathys Tel to hand the Frenchman the keys to the left wing.
Ultimately, Son still does decide his destiny, but if after a meeting with Frank it becomes clear that the new Danish manager has no real role for him, Son may see this as the right opportunity to leave Tottenham on a high note and get one last big paycheck in his career from abroad. At this point, it feels like a Son departure this summer is the most likely outcome.
