Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has fumed at one Tottenham player after he received a yellow card, despite only just returning from a one-game ban
Jamie Carragher slammed Cristian Romero after the Tottenham captain picked up a needless yellow card during Tuesday's trip to Newcastle.
Romero, who missed Saturday's defeat to Fulham after serving a one-game suspension for five bookings, was cautioned for the sixth time this season at St. James' Park.
In the 23rd minute, the Argentina international rushed in and caught Joelinton late, leaving the midfielder on the floor. Referee Tom Bramall was in no hesitation but to give Romero a yellow card.
Reacting to the incident, Carragher wasn't impressed. He said while on co-commentary for Sky Sports: "Romero is not going to change is he? I love aggressive players but he's not going to get the ball there.
"You'd think with age and maturity he'd stop doing it but apparently not."
Should Romero receive four more yellow cards prior to the conclusion of Tottenham's 32nd Premier League game, he would then get a two-match ban.
The most yellow cards Romero has collected in a Premier League season is nine, when he averaged one booking every three matches in the 2022/23 season under Antonio Conte.
Across his top-flight career, Romero has picked up 33 yellow cards in 111 appearances. He has been sent off twice in that period, though his most recent one came over two years ago in the defeat to Chelsea in November 2023.
Thomas Frank's Spurs made the trip to the North East looking to end a three-game losing run and record their first win in the Premier League since October.
Although Tottenham were second best throughout the first half, they went into the break with the score goalless. Lucas Bergvall had Spurs' best chance as he flicked on Mohammed Kudus' cross but his effort flew just over.
Meanwhile, Newcastle went close on a number of occasions during the first period. The closest the Magpies came was when Joelinton hit the base of the post after crashing a low effort across the face of goal.
Newcastle had more shots, shots on target and created a higher expected goals (xG) than Tottenham during the first half. Frank will be hoping for more from his side in the second period.
After Newcastle took the lead through Bruno Guimaraes, Tottenham responded and it was Romero who scored the leveller for Frank's side. He powered home a header following an excellent cross from Kudus.
Tottenham then fell behind once again as Anthony Gordon scored from the spot to put the Magpies 2-1 ahead. However, Spurs bounced back with Romero scoring his second of the night to rescue a valuable point.
