Xavi Simons has struggled since joining Tottenham Hotspur from RB Leipzig for €65m at the end of August.
The Netherlands international is yet to score and contributed one assist from 12 matches for Spurs.
Last week, Dutch journalist Johan Derksen said the Tottenham player isn’t physically strong enough for the Premier League.
Both Derksen and former PSV Eindhoven and Sparta Rotterdam winger René van der Gijp analysed the 22-year-old’s performances for Vandaag Inside on Monday. Voetbal Zone have relayed his comments.
Presenter Wilfred Genee believes the attacking midfielder is struggling physically at Tottenham.
“They’re just pushing him over. He can’t get past them,” he said.
Van der Gijp agrees with Genee’s analysis about the Dutchman and believes his game is ‘too predictable’.
“He just runs with the ball too much. Opponents have said: as soon as he starts running with the ball, just run into him. Finished,” Van der Gijp explained.
Derksen questioned Thomas Frank for praising the attacking midfielder.
“He’s just not good at it. That coach was very pleased with him, but I don’t see it,” he added.
Simons’ compatriot Tijjani Reijnders left AC Milan for Manchester City last summer. Unlike the Spurs signing, the 27-year-old midfielder has had a good start.
Derksen has used Reijnders’ adaptation as an example to be critical of Simons.
“Reijnders has adapted quickly. You don’t see that at all with Simons,” he said.
