Leeds United will be without a key player when they face Tottenham in the Premier League this weekend. Leeds have had a solid start to life back in the Premier League, picking up a respectable eight points from their first six games, leaving them in 12th place and just three points behind Saturday’s opponents Spurs.
Tottenham have been left frustrated by back-to-back draws in the Premier League, but there is generally a positive feel around the North London club, with the team looking much more solid so far under Thomas Frank.
Spurs have a busy schedule, returning to Champions League action last night, and injuries have built up a little again over the last few weeks, which never makes things easy. As for Leeds, they have done pretty well on the injury front so far, but they have been hit with a fresh injury blow in the form of Daniel James.
James came off injured during Leeds’ late defeat to Fulham on September 13, and it was hoped the injury would be a short-term one. But Wales boss Craig Bellamy has confirmed that the winger will remain sidelined for the next few weeks, meaning he will miss the Tottenham game, and he will remain out for the West Ham clash on October 24 unless he returns sooner than anticipated.
“That’s the first I’ve heard of a knee injury. He has an ankle problem,” Bellamy responded during a press conference. “We’ll wait and see, nothing has been confirmed yet so if it’s good, brilliant, but if it isn’t then we’ll adapt. We’re just waiting for confirmation. It’s still too early so we’ll wait and see on that.”
A Leeds spokesperson has since added: “As Wales manager Craig Bellamy confirmed in his press conference earlier today, Daniel James has an ankle issue which is currently undergoing assessment. Any absence is not expected to be long-term and Leeds United manager Daniel Farke will provide a full update during Thursday's press conference."
The Yorkshire Evening Post have since reported that James is expected to miss around six weeks of action.
Leeds boss Farke has praised James this season, saying: "I hope he's a better player working with me for two years. I think he has grown a lot in his personality because he's not the young, potential player any more, he's a proven, mature player. Not by speeches but by his whole behaviour he's taken on more and more responsibility.”
