James fit but unwell as Rosenior rules out 'conspiracy'

Chelsea defender Reece James is a doubt to face Leeds.

Head coach Liam Rosenior revealed the right-back is fit, but was unwell on Monday after missing the last two matches.

"Reece is fit," said Rosenior. "A small issue is that he's feeling unwell today. It's no conspiracy, it's the truth.

"Hopefully, he'll be feeling well enough to be involved in tomorrow's game."

Andrey Santos trained on Monday after picking up a knock against Wolves on Saturday while centre-back Tosin was also involved.

Romeo Lavia is working back to full fitness having trained during the last two days.

Calvert-Lewin, Gruev fit for Chelsea trip

Leeds manager Daniel Farke expects to have Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ilia Gruev fit to face Chelsea, but Pascal Struijk will not make the trip to London.

A 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend boosted Leeds’ survival hopes and they head to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday six points above the relegation zone.

The fitness news is mostly positive leading in to the match and Farke said: “Dominic was struggling a little bit with illness but I hope it’s not too bad and I hope he’s available. In terms of knocks and muscle injuries, there’s nothing.

“Ilia is tough. At the moment, both seem to be available. There is bad news with Pascal Struijk, he will definitely miss this game.

“He has got some problems with his hip flexor and the turnaround will be a bit too quick so he will definitely miss this game.”

Farke is reluctant to set a specific target for his team to guarantee their place in the division, keeping them focused on performances.

“It doesn’t matter if I change anything in my assessment of how many points we need,” he said.

“[Maybe] we need 38 points, but it’s not like if you achieve 38 we want to stop winning points, we want as many as possible. I’m not too concentrated on doing too much math, I’m concentrated on playing good football games and adding a few more positive results.”

Calvert-Lewin, Gruev fit for Chelsea trip

Leeds manager Daniel Farke expects to have Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ilia Gruev fit to face Chelsea, but Pascal Struijk and Anton Stach will not make the trip to London.

“He has got some problems with his hip flexor and the turnaround will be a bit too quick so he will definitely miss this game.

"Anton Stach will be back probably just for the [Aston] Villa game. Apart from this I hope to have everyone available."

Rosenior explains rotation amid fixture pile-up

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior on rotation:

"It's difficult. We've rotated a lot, which we need to do at this stage of the season.

"Bear in mind the players' long-term schedule, they had no pre-season and they've been magnificent. You have to be try and freshen up the team in the right areas, mentally and physically.

"You have to be really well prepared tactically to give the players the right plans and solutions. The players have been great in achieving that."

Concern for player welfare?

"I think so, if I'm being honest. These lads are fantastic professionals - they live for their job which is so important.

"You want the best product possible so we need the best players on the pitch. We have to find a way where we can find the right balance between the two."

Rosenior on facing Leeds...

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior on defeat at Elland Road:

"You watch every game. It's very difficult for me because when I first watched that game, it was as a neutral, I had no idea I'd be manager of Chelsea.

"Going to Elland Road is always difficult. Daniel (Farke) is an outstanding coach. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is in really good form. The way they press, their energy, they're direct in a really positive way.

"It's going to be a very difficult game again. I'm not here to talk in the past or what's happened before I was here. I'm focused on the game tomorrow."
