There could now be question marks over Lucas Bergvall's participation in Sweden's friendly against Luxembourg this weekend after missing training on Thursday due to illness. Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson confirmed earlier this week that the midfielder would be handed his first start for the national side on Saturday after excelling for Tottenham in 2025.
That may be in doubt now with the youngster not taking part in training with the rest of his international teammates in Marbella, Spain on Thursday. The last thing Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham want in the first international break of 2025 is to suffer more scares going on how this season has panned out for the team in terms of absent players.
However, in regards to Bergvall, it is not something for the Spurs boss or fans to be too concerned about given the reason for his absence. Speaking to Swedish publication Aftonbladet, Tomasson opened up on Bergvall's current status and revealed that they will check on him on Friday.
"We are one player short today, we will see how he feels tomorrow," explained the former Denmark striker. "He has a cold and is not in top form. Now he had to stay in bed, so we will see how he feels during the day.
"We will have to wait and see how the match goes on Saturday, we cannot decide that now. He could have maybe been a little bit involved today, but there is no reason to take any risks."
Even if Bergvall doesn't start on Saturday when they travel to Luxembourg, there will be another opportunity for the teenager to do so on Tuesday evening when they host Northern Ireland at Strawberry Arena in Stockholm. That match could potentially see Bergvall come up against Tottenham teammate Jamie Donley after the Leyton Orient loanee switched allegiance from England.
Since joining up with his national side, Bergvall has spoken to the media and discussed his upcoming first start for Sweden after previously making four appearances off the bench. He said: "It's fun but it's not something I've thought about that much.
"Jon and I have talked a little bit but nothing more specific, we'll do it during the days here I think. I'll just play like I did at Tottenham and be able to contribute as much as possible."
