Mathys Tel gave an honest assessment of Thursday’s heavy defeat to FC Bayern, underlining how “Champions League level” was on display from the German champions.

The hosts scored four times without reply at the Allianz Arena, consigning us to our first defeat of pre-season in what was our last match before we lock horns with Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup next week.

Young forward Mathys, who joined us from Bayern earlier this year, received a warm welcome on his return to his former home but was all business when he spoke about what we need on the pitch in the aftermath of the defeat.

“It was a good performance from FC Bayern – we knew that this game would be tough, would be difficult, but we need to learn with this performance, work again and switch on for the next game,” he told SPURSPLAY.

“This is Champions League level. We’re going to play in the Champions League so we need to be ready for these games. We’re going to have a lot of games like this (against high-quality opposition) so we need to be ready.”

Despite the disappointing performance in Germany, Mathys underlined how he remains optimistic for the season ahead, and is enjoying working under Thomas Frank.

“Pre-season has been positive for me because we’ve learned a lot,” he said. “We just need to work harder. I’m looking forward because we have a good team, a good club, good fans and I have lot of confidence about this season.

“Working with Thomas is very good – he has a lot of energy, he brings good vibes in the dressing room, on the pitch, off the pitch so I’m very happy to work with him.”
