Tottenham Hotspur are set to finalise the transfer of Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher today with the player having successfully passed his medical in London.
The 25-year-old flew to the UK on Monday with a view to completing the transfer, which will see Thomas Frank’s side fend off competition from Manchester United and Aston Villa to sign the England international.
Spurs had looked to be behind Unai Emery’s side in the race but an injury to defensive midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur added urgency to the North London club’s push to strengthen in the centre of the park. Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are also all sidelined with injury problems.
Conor Gallagher completes Tottenham Hotspur medical
Taking to social media platform X on Wednesday morning, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano provided the latest on the move with news that the medical had been completed with no unwanted findings.
Romano wrote: “Conor Gallagher completed his medical as new Tottenham player, official statement next to announce him and Brazilian LB Souza from Santos. Atlético Madrid receive €40m.”
Frank is set to have Gallagher eligible to play in the must-win fixture against West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. Spurs are without a win in their last three league outings and take on a Hammers side in dismal Premier League form.
Gallagher will not be able to play for Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night or against Eintracht Frankfurt later this month with squads already submitted.
Aston Villa and Manchester United miss out on transfer
The successful Spurs transfer coup comes as a blow to Aston Villa, whose interest was widely reported. Manchester United also miss out with the Manchester Evening News labelling Gallagher as an ‘obvious target’ following reports of summer interest.
Tottenham Hotspur supporters will be aware of what they are getting in Gallagher following his time at Chelsea and Crystal Palace in the Premier League. The Blues academy product worked his way through the ranks to eventually captain Chelsea.
Speaking in February 2024, after Gallagher bagged a brace for Chelsea against Crystal Palace, Mauricio Pochettino hailed the midfielder as ‘priceless’.
He said: "I think he is a player with a great commitment to the team. He is always trying to compensate in every situation, in offensive and defensive situations. It's priceless to have a player like him."
