Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Luka Vuskovic has caught the attention of fans and colleagues alike so far in pre-season as his career in north London gets off to a promising start.

The 18-year-old signed for Spurs in September 2023 when just 16 years old, with a £12 million fee agreed. However, the rising star continued his development with Hajduk Split before arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Given his young age, Vuskovic had been linked with an immediate loan exit to gain more experience but recent performances in pre-season friendlies have suggested that he could impact the first team sooner than expected.

Standing at 6’ 4”, the centre-back has been an imposing presence and looked assured at the back, as well as dangerous up front. In his first Tottenham Hotspur outing, in the friendly against Reading, he picked up an assist and a goal during the 2-0 win.

Speaking ahead of the fixture against Arsenal on Thursday, Micky Van de Ven was asked about his fellow defender’s progress and heaped praise on the teenager. The Tottenham Hotspur star said: “Luka is only 18 years old but what you can see from how he behaves on the pitch and off the pitch you can see he is a really talented football player.

“He has a lot of qualities and I think he has shown in the last two friendlies that he has a lot of big and strong points where even our centre-backs can learn from. He's done unbelievable at this point and hopefully he can do way more for us and hopefully you can see way more from him.”

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back situation

It remains to be seen what role Vuskovic plays over the course of the 2025/26 season. Speaking about the player following that win over Reading, Spurs manager Thomas Frank said: “Luka deserves the praise as well. A great header. Showed his physicality and his composure on the ball. He’s not getting stressed when opponents get close. And what a strike.”

Vuskovic himself has said that everything is ‘perfect’ going into his first full season at Spurs and that he is ‘really happy’ at the club. The Daily Mail claims that several Bundesliga clubs are interested in taking the player on loan, should another campaign away from the Premier League be deemed the best option.

It remains to be seen whether Cristian Romero remains at the club amid interest from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. Tottenham Hotspur have signed Kevin Danso on a permanent deal and continue to be linked with a move for Crystal Palace man Marc Guehi.
