A decade with Spurs has come to an end for Son Heung-min, who has joined MLS team Los Angeles FC after announcing he would leave the north London club this summer. The 33-year-old gave an emotional message to the Tottenham supporters upon his exit, calling it "one of the hardest decisions I've ever made". Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said Son was "one of the greatest players" in the club's history.

Son Heung-min has left Tottenham to join MLS side LAFC in a deal worth £20 million.

The 33-year-old arrived at the club in August 2015 and leaves as a club legend, having scored 173 goals in 454 appearances.

Son joins LAFC for a fee of $26m (£19.5m). He was present at the club's 2-1 Leagues Cup win over Mexican side Tigres UANL on Tuesday.

The forward announced his decision to leave the club ahead of their pre-season friendly against Newcastle, where he fittingly played his final game for Spurs in front of 64,773 fans in his home country of South Korea.

The South Korea international is fifth on Spurs' all-time scoring list, and was the captain of the club since 2023.

"Well, to all the Spurs fans, I mean, it’s such a hard decision that I will leave the Spurs family. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made," Son said as he wiped away tears.

"And, as I said, there will be no forever. And I gave [my] all. I know it sounds very surprising. I know it sounds very hard. And, because I gave my all, I feel like I need a new chapter."

Son was able to bow out on a high with his greatest achievement in a Spurs jersey when they ended a 17-year wait for a major trophy with last season's UEFA Europa League win.

He also netted several individual awards during his time as a Lilywhite, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22 and the FIFA Puskas Award in 2020.

He continued: "It was probably one of the hardest decisions I ever made, so please don’t be disappointed. I will be disappointed not seeing you on the pitch," he continued.

"I will always be in your history books, and Spurs will always be in my heart, and Spurs will always be in my family."

"And as a kid, you welcomed me and as I grew up I’m leaving you, but there’s always good timing. I always wanted to leave in a perfect way, [so] that people can think about me in very proud moments and very happy moments. This is the right time to say goodbye."

'ONE OF SPURS' GREATEST PLAYERS'

Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy, said: "Sonny is one of the greatest players to ever wear the famous Lilywhite shirt and he has been a joy to watch over the past decade.

"Not only is he a wonderfully gifted footballer, but he’s also an incredible human being who has touched hearts and inspired people throughout the club and all over the world.

"The Europa League triumph in Bilbao was a truly magical moment in the club’s history and Sonny lifting the trophy is a perfect lasting memory from his fantastic decade at Tottenham Hotspur.

"Sonny has given so much to this club, both on and off the pitch, and for that we are forever grateful. We wish him all the best for the future, and he will always be welcome back at the club as a beloved and cherished member of our Spurs family."
