Newcastle United is continuing its search for reinforcements after a summer of major squad changes, with Eddie Howe still looking to strengthen both his midfield and defense ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
The Magpies have already seen an opening bid for Lucas Bergvall turned down by Tottenham Hotspur, but fresh reporting suggests the Sweden international is only part of a much bigger plan.
According to TEAMtalk’s Rob McCarthy, Newcastle is plotting a double move for Bergvall and England full-back Djed Spence, with the combined cost of the two deals potentially reaching €106 million (£90 million).
The report says Newcastle remains determined to land Bergvall after Spurs rejected an initial €54 million (£46 million) offer, while Tottenham continues to value the 20-year-old closer to €59 million (£50 million).
McCarthy wrote that Newcastle hopes to beat Nottingham Forest to Bergvall’s signature despite growing competition, while also targeting Spence after the departures of Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett.
The report adds that Spurs are now seeking closer to €47 million (£40 million) for Spence following his impressive World Cup performances, up from the €29 million (£25 million) valuation reported before the tournament.
McCarthy also says Bergvall is pushing for an exit after Tottenham strengthened its midfield with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
“While the writing appears to be on the wall for the talented Bergvall, Spurs remain reluctant to part ways unless they recoup a figure nearer to that £50m price point,” McCarthy wrote.
If Newcastle ultimately agrees to Tottenham’s valuations, the report suggests Howe could spend close to €106 million (£90 million) to land both players as the club looks to reshape its squad following Tonali’s departure and ongoing uncertainty surrounding captain Bruno Guimaraes.
