The Magpies blew it at the end of a tight contest against Tottenham at St James' Park
Newcastle United dropped two points at home to Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park on a costly night in the Premier League.
The Magpies went in against a Spurs side that had won just one game in seven matches since their last visit to St James' Park in the Carabao Cup. The two sides went in at the break level but Tottenham escaped punishment when Joelinton's stinging effort bounced back off the base of the post.
But it was his fellow countryman Bruno who would break the deadlock after coming off the bench. It was a fellow replacement in Anthony Gordon that finally carved Spurs open with his cross being laid off by Nick Woltemade, before the ex-Lyon star fired home.
Cristan Romero edged Spurs level but Newcastle hit back, hoever, after Gordon's late penalty looked like he had sealed three points for Newcastle a second equaliser deflated the Magpies,
Here's how the Magpies rated against Spurs:
Aaron Ramsdale 6
Barely had a save to make but conceded two soft goals.
Tino Livramento 7
A mature shift in places. Horrified as Romeo's second went in.
Malick Thiaw 6
Cool and composed. But will be disappointed with the second equaliser.
Dan Burn 5
Should have done better on the goal with Romero. Thought he'd saved Newcastle by winning a penalty but collapsed in stoppage time like the rest of his defence.
Lewis Hall 6
Did not stop the cross from Kudus for the equaliser but otherwise a steady night.
Joelinton 6
Unlucky to hit the post. Targeted heavily by Spurs' midfield enforcers.
Sandro Tonali 7
Went about his business well but was replaced at half-time after just 31 touches.
Lewis Miley 7
Kept his place on merit and the teenager played a huge part in this victory. Enjoyed a warm ovation as he went off.
Harvey Barnes 6
A couple of penetrating runs and caused some danger. But on a night when Newcastle needed 8/10 stuff - this was off the mark. Hit three crosses but only one was accurate.
Jacob Murphy 4
Handed a big chance but failed to take it. Lacked impetus and no surprise to see his number come up just after the hour. Managed 10 crosses but few reached the intended recipient.
Nick Woltemade 6
Made a nuisance of himself. Better in the second half. Not at it in stoppage time for the goal that made it 2-2.
Subs
Bruno Guimaraes 8 (for Tonal 46)
Only a sub but still wins man of the match for bringing energy, inspiration and the equaliser to the table. Man of the match.
Anthony Gordon 8 (for Barnes 65)
Changed the narrative on the left. A big hand in the equaliser and then kept his nerve to blast home the winner.
Anthony Elanga 6 (for Murphy 65)
Made a difference. Offered an outlet but froze as the second equaliser went in.
Fabian Schar (for Miley 90)
*Subs must play 15 minutes to get a mark,
