The Magpies have recouped a huge fee for Sandro Tonali after his sale to Tottenham Hotspur was confirmed

Sandro Tonali has completed his switch to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee understood to be around £100m in total.

The Italy star quit Newcastle after citing family reasons for his decision to move down south after three years at the club. However, the Magpies will plough the funds from his sale back into the team on the pitch and have immediately spent some of the cash on Bazoumana Touré.

A club statement from Newcastle read: "Sandro Tonali has completed a permanent transfer to Tottenham Hotspur. The undisclosed transfer fee represents the second largest fee ever received for a player in Newcastle United’s history.

"Sandro departs St James’ Park having made 110 appearances for the club, scoring ten goals in all competitions.

"The 26-year-old, who joined from AC Milan in summer 2023, leaves having also won major silverware on Tyneside. He played an influential role as the club lifted the Carabao Cup in March 2025, and he featured a further 53 times last season, including 11 appearances in the UEFA Champions League.

"Everybody at Newcastle United thanks Sandro for his contribution to the club and wishes him and his family well for the future."

On his way out of the airport in Milan, Tonali told assembled TV reporters when asked if he was happy with the deal: "Absolutely. We've decided to make a change, so we're ready for this new adventure."

Tonali also added: "Newcastle wanted the best for me and we wanted the best deal for them. So I think that once you go like this it is different, so we are all happy and I am ready for the new challenge."

Asked why he chose Spurs, Tonali said: "Let's say Roberto De Zerbi had a big percentage in this, and for a life choice, we come from Newcastle and our lives change with our child's birth. So we decided to change a bit.

"De Zerbi made a great difference and did the job very well."

The Magpies were informed that Tonali wanted to seek a new club via his agent Giuseppe Riso earlier this month, with a number of sides approached over a possible deal, including Arsenal, Man City and Tottenham Hotspur.
