Tottenham were denied a second-half penalty during their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday, with the Magpies seemingly getting away with one
Newcastle United seemingly got away with one during their Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, with the experts claiming the Lilywhites should have been awarded a penalty.
The Magpies ultimately ran out 2-0 winners over Spurs in North London, thanks to second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa.
However, the game could have been flipped on it's head 48 minutes in, when Omar Marmoush was seemingly brought down inside the Newcastle penalty area.
The Egypt international reached a loose ball first and it looked as though Malick Thiaw kicked through the back of his right leg before the new Spurs forward fell to the turf.
While Marmoush and the Tottenham supporters were furious and felt a penalty ought to have been awarded, referee Peter Bankes dismissed appeals and chose not to give Spurs a spot-kick.
VAR, meanwhile, reviewed the incident more closely and backed Bankes' on-field decision. However, Jay Bothroyd believes Tottenham were unlucky not to be given a penalty.
"That's the wrong decision," the former Cardiff City man told Sky Sports. He added: "It should be given as a penalty.

"That's cute play from the forward, it's not the defender's fault. The striker comes round and gets the toe on it.
"There was the Jarrad Branthwaite incident last week - which was offside, but it was a penalty. This one should be as well. I wouldn't say that's minimal contact. He's kicked his foot."
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood also believed Spurs should have been awarded a penalty for the foul on Marmoush - and was left stunned that it wasn't given.
He explained: "The threshold is massively higher. It should be given. There's certainly contact in there.
"Thiaw hasn't seen him coming. Marmoush has done enough to get his toe on it. He's praying for contact.
"Has Thiaw made contact with the ball? No. Has he made contact with the player? Yes. Has he denied a goalscoring opportunity? 100 per cent. Penalty.
"It would have been a different game. Then we'd be talking about [Roberto] De Zerbi in a different way."
The match was level at 0-0 when Marmoush hit the deck, and Tottenham ultimately fell to a 2-0 defeat. It represented back-to-back losses for Spurs this season, having already been thrashed 3-0 at Brentford on the opening weekend.
