ALMOST AN OWN GOAL
Elanga volleys the ball across goal and it strikes the covering Danso on the side of the head, deflecting just wide of his own goal.
CHANGES FOR NEWCASTLE
The hosts make a triple change with an eye on closing this one out and keeping their title defence going into the next round. Trippier, Osula and Joelinton replace Krafth, the excellent Woltemade and Willock.
MUCH BETTER FROM RICHARLISON
An early cross into the box is met by Richarlison, who turns a clever effort on target and Ramsdale makes the save. The hosts go straight back up the other end and earn themselves a corner.
NO CORNER
A deep cross drifts out of play and Spurs appeal for a corner, suggesting it clipped Burn on the way out, but I’m not sure it did and the referees aren’t either.
GREAT SAVE RAMSDALE!
Spurs break and Spence finds Johnson, who squares it for Xavi. It looks like he’s going to shoot, but he spots Sarr arriving and lays it off to him, with Ramsdale making a stunning stop to prevent it finding the bottom corner, and Bergvall’s on his toes as Johnson turns the loose ball across the face of goal. Spurs get the corner in and Ramsdale punches that clear too.
GLIMPSES OF PURE CLASS
Woltemade pulls in three defenders before playing Willock in on the break. He’s got a lot of ground to cover to get into the final third, but still should do better with support arriving and Spurs stretched.
THE FINAL PASS IS OVERHIT
Xavi’s face is a picture of frustration as he does well as part of a Spurs move that sees them win the ball with the high press and then break into the final third through the Dutchman, but his final pass is overhit, when it really wasn’t a tricky ball into the path of Johnson. The home fans enjoyed that.
THE ASSISTANT MAKES THE DECISION
Tonali hauls Xavi back by the neck of the Spurs man’s shirt and at first the ref allows play to continue, but the assistant lets him know it’s a foul and Spurs get the free-kick.
GOAL! NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-0 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (NICK WOLTEMADE)
It’s a second for Newcastle and it’s the big striker Woltemade who gets it, nodding in Willock’s cross. It was a nice move from the hosts, but it’s a big error from the Spurs keeper Kinsky, who comes charging off his line to try and meet it, but punches thin air and Woltemade’s soft header loops into an unguarded net. He won’t want to see that again. 2-0.
HUGE CHANCE MISSED
Willock wins a header and sends it looping harmlessly wide of the far post. He either should have tested the keeper in a great position, or cushion it across to the unmarked Woltemade, but did neither. Perhaps he got caught in two minds, but it is not good.
HALF-TIME: HOSTS LEAD AT THE BREAK
The whistle goes and Newcastle head in 1-0 up at half-time in a high-tempo and hard-fought game at St James’ Park. Newcastle have been excellent in patches, but Spurs were much better in the back-end of that half and we could have a game on after the interval, stay tuned!
CHANCES FOR SPURS
The ball drops for Richarlison but his header is straight at Ramsdale, and moments later Xavi Simons has a crack from outside the box, which takes a nick off the defender and a touch from Ramsdale over the bar, so the fact that a goal-kick is given just further riles a Spurs side close to losing their heads with the referee.
MUCH BETTER FROM SPURS
The final pass hasn’t really fallen for them, but Spurs have looked way better going forward since they went behind, offering plenty of threat. They have some attacking options on the bench, although Odobert isn’t one of them. That makes it 11 first-team squad players unavailable for Spurs right now.
LET IT FLOW
Spence drives forward down the left and has three players on him. He’s bumped and barged and looks to be hauled down by Tonali, but the ref waves play on. The officials are certainly letting play flow tonight, let’s say that.
SHOULD BE A SECOND
Newcastle should be two up. Spurs fail to clear a long throw and Newcastle get the ball back in. Thiaw meets at the back post but plays it almost sideways, shanking it unintentionally to Barnes, who manages to get a boot up to it but can’t keep his effort down.
