QPR are set to hand a transfer below to Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, among other Premier League clubs, by convincing rising star Emmerson Sutton to continue his progress at Loftus Road.
TBR Football reported on Tuesday that Spurs and the Blues were just two Premier League outfits monitoring the 17-year-old, who has been compared to former R’s academy graduate Eberechi Eze. Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Brighton were all also named in the report as potential suitors for the QPR man.
However, it is now claimed that Sutton will not leave QPR in the near future. It is reported that the player is close to signing his first professional contract with the club and could make his first team debut in the not so distant future with Marti Cifuentes a fan of the player’s progress.
QPR youngster known for ‘spirited’ performances
Sutton bagged a hat-trick in the FA Youth Cup against Arsenal recently, taking the match to penalties, which QPR lost 4-2 in the shoot-out. Last October, the player joined local Southern League Premier South side Hanwell Town on a month long work experience loan.
That move came after the player impressed against Hanwell Town in pre-season friendly action for the Development Squad - he was praised for his ‘spirited pressing’, which lead to the first goal in a 3-1 R’s win, by the club website. The midfielder has been in the Loftus Road youth set-up since under-12 level and can play both as a number 10 and a winger.
A club bio of Sutton reads: “Emmerson Sutton joined QPR at Under-12 level. He hails from Lewisham. A versatile midfield player, Emmerson’s strengths include his dribbling and defending. The highlight of his career so far has been scoring three goals in a district final and subsequently being scouted by QPR. Emmerson cites his uncle as the greatest influence on him to date.”
Emmerson set to follow in Kieran Morgan steps
The player’s decision to continue his progress at QPR could come after the breakthrough of Kieran Morgan into the first team. Released by Tottenham Hotspur last season, the 18-year-old was recruited by the R’s to be part of the Development Squad.
However, injuries to first team stars afforded Morgan the chance to feature in the matchday squad and he scored in his second first team appearance, a leveller against Coventry City in October. Since then, Morgan has become a mainstay in Cifuentes’ plans and one of the first names in the starting XI.
The former Spurs man signed a new long-term contract with the club this month to reflect his contributions. Speaking at the time, Morgan said: “Obviously I am really happy. It has gone quite quick and I just want to say thank you to all the staff, fans and players that have welcomed me. I have to keep pushing now. This is only the start.
“With opportunities that have come around I have taken them, and that’s credit to the staff that have trusted me, and the players. I have faith and belief in myself. I think I have shown on the pitch I am doing quite well. I am playing with confidence and freely, and I have got to keep playing like that.”
In other news, QPR Championship rivals Sheffield United appear to have located a new transfer target following news of interest in R’s defender Jimmy Dunne.
