TBR Football can confirm that contract talks with Djed Spence have accelerated over recent weeks, with Tottenham Hotspur keen to reward his impressive form.
Only last summer did Spence sign a new deal in North London, but following an impressive breakout campaign in the capital, Spurs are ready to reward him.
The 25-year-old has become a key member of Spurs’ squad with his ability to play on either side of the defence, a really useful asset.
Spence could start in Tottenham’s first-ever UEFA Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening, highlighting his importance to the team.
Djed Spence has been impressing Thomas Frank at Tottenham
Djed Spence has really impressed Thomas Frank during the Danish head coach’s time at Tottenham Hotspur, sources have told TBR Football’s Chief Correspondent, Graeme Bailey.
Spurs’ new manager has been most impressed by the defender’s versatility, as he can play as both a left-back and right-back.
Spence looked great against Bukayo Saka during Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Arsenal during their pre-season tour of Asia.
Bailey told TBR Football: “Spurs are really happy with Spence and Thomas Frank has been really impressed since arriving. I am told he is one of the players who has shone since Frank’s arrival.
“I get the idea that Spence has a major, major role to play for Spurs heading into the new season.”
Now, an initial four-year deal has been offered to the defender and is not far off being signed.
The new contract offer also involves a significant pay rise for Spence, who thinks he has a good chance of going to the World Cup next year.
Djed Spence’s hopes of going to 2026 World Cup
Spence, who Mikey Moore called ‘rapid’, faces strong competition for a spot in England’s 2026 World Cup squad as Thomas Tuchel has plenty of top options to pick from.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is the most likely option for right-back, meanwhile, Myles Lewis-Skelly is making great progress at left-back.
Spence will need to be playing most matches at Tottenham and impressing the Three Lions’ boss with his performances to stand a chance of even breaking into the squad.
But after the last 12 months in a Spurs shirt, the 25-year-old has shown that he has the potential to make a strong case for his inclusion.
