Manchester United take on Tottenham Hotspur on the road in Saturday’s Premier League clash.
The Red Devils are unbeaten in the last four league games with three wins and one draw.
They are only goal difference behind Spurs, while just one point separates them from the top four.
Ahead of tomorrow’s game in north London, Amorim was asked plenty of questions by the media. One of those was focused on the future of Casemiro, whose contract expires next summer.
The Red Devils have an option to prolong his stay. When asked about the 12-month extension clause, Amorim said that his goal is to continue with Casemiro and Harry Maguire next season.
The Portuguese tactician added that he is ‘really happy’ with Casemiro and Maguire, but has no idea what is going to happen. A decision could be made at the end of the ongoing campaign.
He said in the embargoed section of Thursday’s presser: “Yeah, we don’t know what is going to happen. My goal is to continue to count with Casemiro, with Harry Maguire.
“He has the same problem [Maguire]. I don’t know what is going to happen. Let’s focus on this season.
“I am really happy with Casemiro. He is really important. I am really happy with Harry.
“I know what you guys are asking [about possible renewals]. Let’s focus on this season and then we will see.”
Casemiro endured a tough time when Amorim first arrived in November last year. He was out of the picture for a starting role for several months due to his limited mobility.
However, the £70 million signing managed to regain the manager’s confidence during the final phase of last season and has been almost ever-present in the number six role this campaign.
United have picked up 16 points in Casemiro’s last six starts in the league. He has made four goal contributions from nine appearances in the English top-flight this season.
He has become an indispensable figure, and it is unsurprising that Amorim wants to keep him.
Similarly, Maguire has had a superb turnaround under Amorim’s tutelage. The manager has personally said that the £80 million signing is most effective in the middle of a back three.
With two centre-backs alongside him, the Englishman does not need to move out of position to make defensive contributions. The 32-year-old is thereby ‘more comfortable’ in his role.
Maguire is no longer in his prime but would be a good rotational player if he extends his stay beyond June 2026. He has the ability to step up in the big games and recently scored the winner at Liverpool.
We have predicted him to start against Tottenham tomorrow. He could be key to nullifying Micky van de Ven’s aerial presence from set pieces, and could also pose a scoring threat in the opposition box.
