Ruben Amorim: Manchester United boss on reaching UEFA Europa League final - ‘If we don't win it, it means nothing for us’

Updated 09/05/2025 at 08:45 GMT+1

Ruben Amorim is wasting no time celebrating Manchester United securing their spot in the UEFA Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur, and in his words, losing out on the trophy will "mean nothing" for the club, even if they can be proud of making it to this stage. Premier League rivals United and Spurs will clash in Bilbao on May 26, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Ruben Amorim is already looking ahead to Manchester United's UEFA Europa League final against Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, and he knows that only one result will be acceptable for the club.

A 7-1 aggregate win over Athletic Club set up a final showdown with Spurs at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.

United have two Premier League matches, against West Ham and Chelsea, separating them from the final on May 21, and Amorim is already stressing about the need to keep a clean bill of health throughout the squad for that date.

'Why do I care?' - Postecoglou says Man Utd comparisons aim to 'diminish' Spurs run

"I'm just worried about the next game, trying not to get any injuries for the final," he told TNT Sports after the game. "We need to win it. If we don't win it, it means nothing for us. So let's see.

"We have to have a full squad, that is really important. And we need to study the game quite well. And we need to have a little bit of luck. Today we suffered a goal, but we had so many transitions to score a goal and we didn't. We have to be clinical.

"It's quite similar for me and Ange [Postecoglou]. It's a tough moment, one of us is going to win. But it's going to be a big final and we are going to try to win."

He continued: "It's hard to describe what it is to be manager of this kind of club, and you want to give something to them [the fans] because we were so disappointing in the Premier League. It's more important to give something to them than to put something in my sheet. I think I talk for every player in that dressing room, we want to give something to those fans."

The Spaniards struck first at Old Trafford with a first-half goal that threatened to unravel United's hard work in the first leg.

Bilbao retained their lead, and their hope, until the 72nd minute when Mason Mount unbottled 20 months of frustration to level the score on the night, just 10 minutes after coming off the bench.

Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund fired home following that, and Mount scored his second of the night in the 91st minute to bookend a comeback that secured their place in the final.

"I'm so happy for Mason Mount," Amorim said about Mount. "He is such a player. He works really hard, he has quality. I really like Kobbie Mainoo, just 10 minutes but everything he did was really good and sometimes you're on the bench and can change the game.

"When you see that kind of guy working hard every day, eating well, having ice baths, he does everything. When you have this kind of player you just want to help him. He is perfect for that position as he can be a midfielder, he can run like a winger, he can play with his back to goal. I'm really happy for him."

The next job for Amorim will be keeping his squad intact for the final with Spurs in Bilbao on May 26, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Postecoglou's side cruised through to the final showdown with a 5-1 aggregate win over Bodo/Glimt, beating the Norwegians 2-0 in th Arctic Circle, thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro.
