Tottenham Hotspur’s 2026/27 season has got off to a distinctly mixed start. Roberto De Zerbi’s new-look side began the season with a brutal 3-0 hammering at the hands of Brentford, before registering an impressing 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup. Things took a turn for the worst three days later, when they lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle United.
Off the field, it was a highly successful summer transfer window for Spurs, who put last season’s close call with relegation behind them and went big in the summer transfer window. Tottenham went out with a clear strategy to sign exclusively players with Premier League experience, and spent over £330m on the likes of Savio, Jan Paul van Hecke and Sandro Tonali.
De Zerbi will be eager to see his side get some Premier League points on the board this weekend, when they travel to take on Oliver Glasner’s Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Ahead of the Saturday afternoon kick-off, we’ve rounded up the latest Spurs injury news as they look to navigate the early stages of the season with a relatively clean bill of health.
Will Savio play against Nottingham Forest?
New boy Savio came off the bench and netted just eleven minutes into his debut against the Addicks, but limited training time at his former club Manchester City during his transfer saga looks to have come at a cost. The young Brazilian missed the subsequent match against Newcastle with a muscular issue, and currently looks to be 50/50 to be back in time to face Forest.
Meanwhile, James Maddison, who missed much of the 2025/26 campaign with a serious ACL injury, fractured his shoulder during Spurs’ season opener against Brentford. The seven-cap England international’s latest setback isn’t thought to be too serious, however. He could be back to play Forest, but the next game against Everton on September 12th feels more likely.
Wilson Odobert is a more long-term injury concern, as he continues to work on his rehabilitation after suffering a ruptured ACL in a 2-1 home loss to Newcastle United back in February. He underwent surgery soon afterwards, ruling him out for the rest of the season. The Frenchman could potentially be back by the north London derby against Arsenal on December 5th
Spurs injury news: Kulusevski return moves closer
In more positive news, The Athletic report that Dejan Kulusevski is back in full training with Spurs, a whole 477 days on from suffering a serious knee injury. He had a procedure on his knee patella cartilage following a Premier League clash against Crystal Palace back in May 2025, and has been recovering ever since.
Tottenham will be highly cautious when it comes to returning the Ukrainian ace to the rigours of first-team action, knowing that a reoccurrence of the injury could be catastrophic for hopes of sustaining his career. It’s therefore tricky to put a pin on a date when he could return, but a late September cameo or two surely can’t be ruled out as he looks to build match fitness.
Xavi Simons is another player who’s been on the sidelines for some time, after suffering an ACL injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers back in April, ruling him out of Spurs’ Premier League run-in and the Netherlands’ deeply underwhelming World Cup campaign. He’s still recovering from surgery, but judging by past instances of the same injury suffered by other players, a late February return looks to be likely.
