Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a promising boost in their pursuit of Southampton wonderkid Tyler Dibling with news that the London outfit are the most likely Premier League side to compete with RB Leipzig for the 18-year-old.
Late last year, The Daily Mail had named Newcastle United and Liverpool as interested parties in the midfielder, who is enjoying a breakthrough season at St Mary's Stadium. Dibling had previously spent time in the youth academies at Chelsea and Exeter City.
The Saints have managed a dismal six points in the Premier League so far this season but Dibling has stood out as the big positive from the campaign. The player's four goals and two assists across all competitions only scratch the surface of a talent who has turned heads with is pace and flair.
RB Leipzig courting Southampton talent
German giants RB Leipzig have had their interest piqued by the teenager and are knocking on Southampton's door this month. The Bundesliga side appear to be early frontrunners but, in a fresh update today, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg claimed that Spurs are real contenders.
Taking to social media platform X, Plettenberg wrote: "Tottenham are currently the biggest competitor for RB Leipzig in the race for Tyler #Dibling as exclusively revealed today.
"Southampton have rejected all offers so far and want to extend the contract beyond 2027. Leipzig aware of the strong competition, especially from England but pushing to sign the 18-year-old super talent from Southampton. Dibling is currently injured and is expected to be fit again in a few weeks."
The Saints will be desperate to keep the talent as they look to pull off a miraculous escape from relegation under new manager Ivan Juric. The South Coast club sit bottom of the table, 10 points adrift of safety.
Spurs may have pushed ahead of Newcastle United and Liverpool in the transfer race but must still compete with Leipzig, although could be helped by the player's personal preference over his future. TeamTALK claims that Dibling is 'very keen' on a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and that Spurs have been 'putting in the graft behind the scenes' to build that relationship.
Tyler Dibling tipped to achieve ‘something special’
Speaking on Match of the Day in December, former Tottenham Hotspur star Danny Murphy tipped Dibling to go on and achieve big things in his career. The pundit said: "It is the quality he has got - the belief in himself and the physical power. He just goes past people with ease. He has got a lovely left foot. He is very brave on the ball and his decision-making is good.
"It is difficult to get too over the top with these young players, because he has just come on to the scene, but he is going to be something special. It is great for him getting all these minutes at Southampton. They are giving him the freedom to play and giving him time to learn the game.
"He is just enjoying himself and he is playing with a real belief in himself. He is just instrumental in this team."
