Tottenham are being linked with a Premier League winger as they look to build a squad good enough to compete in the Champions League next season. Spurs need to strengthen significantly to make the step up. and whoever takes over from Ange Postecoglou is going to demand such improvements to take the job.
Thomas Frank is likely to be the next man in, and he will want players who fit his brand of football, which is an attractive brand at that. Injuries tore Tottenham’s season apart last term, and that highlighted the lack of depth within the squad, and unless it is addressed, it will be exposed further when competing in the higher level of the Champions League.
It has been a strange summer so far for Spurs, given their lack of manager, but we have still seen some players being linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium. Attackers are most commonly linked, which is no surprise given the space in the Tottenham attack, with Timo Werner returning to RB Leipzig.
One of the latest links involves AFC Bournemouth wideman Antonio Semenyo, who is being heavily linked with a move this summer. The 25-year-old scored 13 times and provided seven assists in the season just gone. The winger is under a long-term contract with the Cherries, and reports have claimed he will command an asking price of £70million this summer.
It’s unclear whether Spurs will commit so much money to one player, but former scout Mick Brown believes they are interested, telling Football Insider: “Semenyo has had a very good season at Bournemouth and a lot of clubs have taken note of that. Tottenham are certainly among them, and they’ve been very impressed by what they’ve seen. He’s built a justified reputation for himself and now I think he’s ready for the step up.
“With Man United focusing elsewhere, Tottenham will be given the chance to make a move with a free run at him, and I expect they’ll want to take that chance. If they can wrap it up quickly, it will be far easier than getting involved in a bidding war.”
Semenyo on his future
Speaking to The Athletic about transfer links during the season, Semenyo said: “I do hear it. But I try not to take too much notice. It is so early in the season and that can all fade away in a split second.
“It is great to hear they are interested — I don’t know how true that is — but I just want to focus on my game, continue doing what I’m doing, causing problems, scoring goals, getting assists. That’s the main thing. If that does come we will deal with that then but at this moment in time it is just about staying focused on what the goal and the plan is this year.”
Though, Semenyo also admitted: “I am an Arsenal fan. I don’t conflict the two with my job. It is great to play against Arsenal, a team I have watched all my life and I want to play for the top clubs as well. In order for that to happen I need to prove it.”
