Tottenham will have to battle to keep hold of some of their best players this summer despite winning the Europa League. Spurs have given themselves a leg up after winning the Europa League, winning silverware and securing qualification for next season’s Champions League.
Players often jump at the opportunity to compete in UEFA’s premier competition, but there are some players with even greater ambitions. One of those could be Cristian Romero, who has voiced his displeasure at Tottenham’s lack of ambition at board level in the past.
Romero was excellent in the final, putting on a stellar display as part of a Tottenham back-line that looked unbreakable on the night. Speaking after the final, the Argentine stold Movistar: “It was a tough season for us. The truth is that we deserved to end like this because nobody knows what happens behind closed doors. But beyond everything we always put up a good fight. We had too many injuries and there was always bad talk about this team and the coach. We shut many mouths.
"Beyond that, we are very happy because we played a good game. We deserved to finish like this. In the end we closed a season that looked like it was going very badly, but we closed a great one with an European title and we are very happy with that. The things that are said outside the club I can't stop them and neither can I be clarifying all the time, because I always gave 100% for this shirt. The affection I receive day after day at the club shows me that they love me very much. I love this club very much, I achieved a very big goal," he said.
"Tottenham had not lifted a trophy for many years and I came with the mentality of making history, which is the only way to leave my name engraved. It was like that and I achieved it. So I'm very happy and now it's time to enjoy it with my teammates and my family, who I owe everything to.”
Romero ‘wants to leave’
According to a fresh report from Marca, Romero ‘wants to leave’ Tottenham for Atletico Madrid this summer. Atletico are expected to sign a new centre-back this summer, and Romero has reportedly been identified as one of their prime targets.
It’s claimed Tottenham want at least £58.8million, or 70 million euros, for Romero, although Atletico will naturally want to pay significantly less than that. Spurs may feel they are in a good position, especially with the Champions League qualification in the bag, but if Romero decides to push for an exit, Daniel Levy and Spurs may have a big problem on their hands.
Either way, it would be a good idea for Tottenham to start drafting up possible replacements for Romero ahead of the summer, when they were already likely to sign a centre-back to add further depth after a troublesome campaign in terms of injuries. Then again, Kevin Danso is likely to be signed on a permanent deal to fill one of those spots having impressed in his limited time with the club.
