Tottenham Hotspur host Newcastle United on Saturday evening (kick-off, 5.30pm), and will be hoping for a significantly improved performance than the one they produced in the same slot at Brentford a week ago.
Both Spurs and Newcastle picked up their first wins of the season in the EFL Cup in midweek. Between them, their four competitive games so far have produced a total of 18 goals and I think there will be plenty of entertainment in north London this evening.

Both teams have scored in the past four Premier League matches between Tottenham and Newcastle. Their last 11 meetings in the top flight have all produced at least three goals.
Last Sunday’s defeat by Brentford was the first time Tottenham received fewer than three cards since Roberto De Zerbi took charge, although they did concede 14 fouls in the game.
Referee Peter Bankes averages 4.07 cards per game across his Premier League career, in which he has officiated 115 matches.
Goals a fixture when these sides meet
Goals are usually guaranteed when Spurs play Newcastle and the two sides’ starts to the season only bolsters confidence that the trend will continue.
Tottenham’s first two games have produced nine goals, the same tally as Newcastle’s two fixtures.
Remarkably, at least three goals have been scored in each of the previous 11 league meetings between the clubs. Both teams have found the net in each of the past four Premier League encounters.
Spurs were worse than anyone could have predicted in the 3-0 loss at Brentford last Saturday, while Newcastle were better than most expected in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool. The Magpies have also lost just one of the past nine meetings between the clubs, so picking a winner for this game is tricky.
Instead, I am focusing on the goals angle for my first bet of the day. Given the recent trends and the way the sides have played so far this season, it would be a surprise if this was a low-scoring game.
While punters backing both teams to score and over 2.5 goals can usually expect the price to be odds-against, I think the 5/6 available for the bet to win in this fixture is very fair.
The additions of Omar Marmoush and Savio make Spurs a much more threatening team. Dominic Solanke’s goal in the 5-1 win over Charlton in the EFL Cup was a relief for all concerned, the striker having failed to find the net since March. So he should be fired up for this one, too.
Newcastle showed how threatening they can be on the counter against Liverpool, particularly with their first goal. I expect them to employ the same style here and their pace could catch Spurs out.

Spurs’ ill-discipline is worth following
It is well documented that Tottenham struggled with discipline last season, ending the campaign with more yellow cards (99) than any other team. They also had four players sent off.
Things did not improve after Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment as head coach. In fact, they got worse.
In each of De Zerbi’s first seven games in charge of Spurs, they received at least three cautions. They racked up five alone in the crucial win over Aston Villa.
While Conor Gallagher was the only Tottenham player to be booked in the Brentford defeat, they may have benefited from referee Michael Oliver’s leniency. But only five teams conceded more fouls than their 15 on the opening weekend, so their disciplinary problems are far from fixed.
I tipped Spurs to receive at least three cards on a couple of occasions during their end-of-season run, and I am surprised it is still an attractive price. Betfred is offering odds of 13/8 for referee Peter Bankes to award Spurs three or more cards against Newcastle.
Bankes is not the strictest official in the game, but he does average 4.07 cards per game across his 115-match Premier League career.
If Spurs do not make a quick start tonight, or if they are frustrated by Newcastle, it would not be a surprise if things boil over. Backing their ill-discipline to come to the fore once again looks to be the way to go.

Bet builder: Solanke to test Hornicek
My final tip for this fixture is a four-leg bet builder that pays out at just under 4/1 if every selection wins.
I am kicking off with both teams to score, for all the reasons I have mentioned above. Tottenham have recorded only two Premier League clean sheets in 2026, while Newcastle have not kept one since March.
A goal in the win against Charlton should have fired up Solanke and I expect him to start this game. That was his only shot on target but I expect him to force Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek into action this evening. Solanke averaged 1.3 shots per game last season, despite struggling with injuries.
Anthony Elanga opened the scoring in Newcastle’s draw with Liverpool. He was a nightmare for the Reds’ defence all afternoon, drawing three fouls. Considering this game is likely to be played in the same vein, I think it is worth backing him to be fouled at least twice.
Finally, I am adding over 3.5 total cards in the match. I have outlined Spurs’ disciplinary problems above, and Newcastle showed similar signs in the Liverpool draw. Only Brentford conceded more than their 16 fouls in Gameweek 1, so it is no surprise Newcastle also picked up the most bookings with five. It should be a busy afternoon for Bankes.
