Tottenham’s bid to land an experienced Premier League star appears to hinge on one key factor. Spurs are hoping to strengthen significantly this month in a bid to turn around what has been a very disappointing Premier League campaign.

The North London club are currently in the bottom half, and there is plenty of concern from supporters. Thomas Frank is under serious pressure, while many fans are not happy with the club’s bosses.

Tottenham have been hit with several big injury blows of late, with Richarlison, Mohammed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur and Ben Davies all sidelined until the spring. With Brennan Johnson having been sold, and with talk Radu Dragusin could follow, it’s going to be a tough ask for Frank to turn things around with the current squad, at least with the injuries that have stacked up, but new signings do appear to be on their way.

Conor Gallagher was signed early in the window, but offensive signings, which are one of the priorities have so far been hard to come by. Frank will be desperate for a new attacker or two, but that’s not the only areea Spurs want to address.

Tottenham want a new defender this month, and Liverpool star Andy Robertson is the main target, with the Scot out of contract this summer. Spurs were said to be planning to wait until the summer, but they have brought forward their plans due to seeing an opportunity, given Robertson’s dissatisfaction with his game time.

The deal will still be a cheap one, but it will offer Liverpool the change to pocket some change. Although, at this point, it seems the deal’s potential to go ahead is less about money and more about Liverpool’s ability to plug the gap that would be left by Robertson.

According to The Athletic, talks have not been progressing of late, but that is because Liverpool have been struggling to reach an agreement over the return of Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell with AS Roma. It’s claimed Roma are willing to allow Tsimikas to return, but they will only allow it if they can find a satisfactory replacement.

With no standing recall clause, Roma hold the cards with Tsimikas, and it’s claimed they are determined not to rush into finding a replacement, leaving Liverpool and Tottenham waiting further down the chain.

Frank on Robertson

Speaking after the Burnley game, Frank was asked about a possible Robertson signing, but he refused to be drawn.

He responded: “Just on that one, in general you don't know me that well, I don't speak about players that are not in the club, except Ronaldo and Messi. So that's no comment.”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot had a very similar reaction, making it clear that he would not be discussing any transfer dealings that are not finalised. This could be a deal that goes until the very end of the transfer window, given the chain of events that needs to play out for all three clubs to get what they want.
