The hunger to end a run of three straight defeats in the WSL was there for all to see - underlined by a final shot count of 28 against a team previously unbeaten at home this term.
Four of those attempts hit the back of the net - all sublime finishes.
Julie Blakstad got us up and running by rifling into the top corner, Olivia Holdt clipped home a peach of a free-kick for 2-0 after 50 minutes and three minutes later, Signe Gaupset started and finished a move, drilling low into the corner. Four minutes from time, Victoria Pelova turned defenders inside-out before firing home.
All that was missing was the icing on the cake for Drew Spence to mark becoming the WSL's all-time appearance maker - this was her 217th, moving her ahead of Millie Bright - when she broke through in the final minute, only to fire over.
Martin Ho made two changes from our last WSL outing against Arsenal with Amanda Nilden and Holdt replacing Alice Sombath, who is now sidelined with an ACL injury, and Eveliina Summanen, who dropped to the bench.
We were soon on the front foot at St Andrews as Holdt drove to the byline to win a corner, initially cleared but played back in by Pelova for the first chance as Spence headed back for Matilda Vinberg, who headed straight at Sophie Baggaley.
City had the next two chances as lively striker Oceane Hurtre dragged across goal from the left angle before Lize Kop touched Lee's drive onto the crossbar.
It was our turn to hit the woodwork on 24 minutes as Neve Herron somehow hooked Gaupset's effort off the line, the clearance fell to Vinberg, who rattled the underside of the crossbar from 12 yards. Holdt then volleyed wide from 14 yards.
The opener on 37 minutes also came via Gaupset hitting the crossbar - this time, a cheeky lob hit the woodwork, Cathinka Tandberg, surrounded, had the awareness to roll back to Blakstad, who rifled into the roof of the net. Hurtre had another chance on the break from our corner and went for a lob from distance, just over.
City came flying out of the traps in the second half and Lily Crosthwaite, on at half-time, lashed just wide moments after kick-off.
However, we took a grip on proceedings with two superb goals in the space of three minutes. First up, Holdt was tripped by Lisa Naalsund on the edge of the box. The Denmark forward picked herself up, weighed up her options and simply floated the perfect curler into the top corner.
It was soon 3-0, and this was all about Gaupset. The midfielder started the move by driving forward and then finding Holdt, who played inside to Pelova. Meanwhile, Gaupset continued her run, took the pass from from Pelova and drilled into the far corner from 16 yards.
The Blues were given a glimmer of hope as Herron turned home Hurtre's corner at the near post for 3-1 on 64 minutes and moments later, Rebecca McKenna broke through on the right, firing straight at Kop.
However, the home side's momentum was halted by substitutions and then a couple of injuries - Eveliina Summanen, only on for nine minutes, was forced off with an injury and then Kop, who was okay after taking a whack coming for a cross.
We wrestled back control and struck the woodwork again on 77 minutes. Baggaley parried Pelova's 20-yarder, Hanson got onto the loose ball, controlled and hit a fierce strike that crashed back off the underside of the crossbar.
Pelova put the issue beyond doubt on 84 minutes. Martinez did well to win the ball in the right channel and came inside to Pelova, who turned left and right before firing low into the corner for 4-1, her sixth of the campaign.
Both teams went close late on - Hurtre hit the crossbar and then Spence, looking for a dream end to her special day, cut inside from the left, only to fire over.
