Tottenham Hotspur are now in talks to sign a Premier League winner in an attempt to revive their frontline this summer.
Tottenham burst into race for Premier League winner
It's been an incredibly tough season for the Lilywhites, who have failed to improve on last season's failure and still face the very real threat of shock relegation as a result.
This summer's transfer window will arguably be the most important in the history of the club. Get it wrong, and the consequences could be damning.
It should be seen as the chance to welcome a fresh start with several new stars, having failed to build a squad capable of at least pushing back into the top half last summer.
The rumour mill certainly suggests that Tottenham are willing to spend this summer. Recent reports have name-dropped the likes of Robin Risser and young Bayer Leverkusen star Francis Onyeka as targets, and both are now ones to watch.
Risser would be a particularly strong signing, given the key role that he's played in Lens' shock title race in Ligue 1. At just 21 years old, he would be an instant upgrade on the struggling Guglielmo Vicario.
It's not just on the pitch that Tottenham need additions, however. They've also got to find themselves a long-term replacement for interim boss Igor Tudor.
Whoever it is that arrives will be their fourth manager in the space of just over a year - summing up their struggles to hire the right man for the job.
To that end, a number of potential options have already threatened to steal the headlines, including Adi Hutter and Mauricio Pochettino. Both would, on paper, be upgrades on Tudor, but Spurs must survive if they are to welcome options of such calibre.
The same can also be said for an attacking star. According to TeamTalk, Tottenham have held talks with Cody Gakpo's agent, bursting into the race to sign the Premier League winner this summer. Anything but survival would end those talks quicker than they've started, though.
Gakpo arrival would revive Tottenham attack
Liverpool's trash could quickly become Tottenham's treasure this summer if they sign Gakpo. Dubbed "excellent" by Joe Cole last season, the Dutchman has struggled at Anfield this season, but is the profile of attacker that could help the Lilywhites get the best out of the likes of Randal Kolo Muani.
The Liverpool man is, at his best, a goalscoring winger and goals from wide is something that Spurs have lacked all season long - whether it's been Xavi Simons out there or someone like Mohammed Kudus.
What's more, the fact that Gakpo's main trait is his ability to cut inside means that Djed Spence would have plenty of space to overlap down the left-hand side. It would instantly make for an improved partnership in North London.
Reports that Gakpo's agent has contacted Premier League sides about a summer switch indicates that, should Tottenham avoid the drop, the deal could very much be on.
