Thomas Frank explains vision for Tottenham Hotspur ahead of facing 'probably best team in the world' Paris Saint-Germain in UEFA Super Cup final

Thomas Frank will face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night in his first competitive match in charge of Tottenham Hotspur. The new Spurs boss believes they are going up against "probably the best team in the world" just days before the new Premier League season. In an exclusive interview with TNT Sports, Frank also explained ambitions for his tenure in north London.

Tottenham Hotspur have another shot at silverware on Wednesday evening, just months after ending their 17-year trophy drought.

In what will be Thomas Frank’s first competitive game in charge at Spurs, the UEFA Europa League winners will face the UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, shown live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Frank, who made the move to north London this summer after seven years at Brentford, believes his opponents in the Italian city of Udine are "probably the best team in the world right now".

And it would be hard to disagree with the Dane after watching PSG dismantle Inter Milan to lift Europe’s most coveted trophy back in May.

The likes of Vitinha, Ousmane Dembele and Nuno Mendes are all in contention for the Ballon d’Or after their scintillating display in the 2025 final in Munich.

But despite going up against the young, explosive French outfit, Frank is confident his side can put up a fight in the final.

"We have a top opportunity tomorrow against probably the best team in the world right now," he said in an exclusive interview with TNT Sports.

"And the beautiful thing in football [is] if you have two teams that are competing, there’s a good chance that you can compete in one game, and we will definitely be ready for that."

The UEFA Super Cup will be Tottenham’s last match before the Premier League gets back underway on Friday, August 15.

They begin their 2025/26 campaign on Saturday with a home fixture against newly-promoted Burnley, after defending champions Liverpool host Bournemouth in the opening fixture the night before.

Ahead of a new era for Spurs, Frank says his goal is to "build a team that consistently can compete in all tournaments".

Despite jubilation at beating Manchester United in the Europa League final to lift their first trophy since 2008, the club had a disappointing 2024/25 Premier League campaign, finishing 17th — one place away from relegation.

It was this league position which sealed Ange Postecoglou’s fate, with the Australian dismissed even though he delivered on his promise of always winning a trophy in his second season.

They were also dumped out of the FA Cup in the fourth round, before a 4–1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool knocked them out of the EFL Cup at the semi-final stage.

"I am pretty sure that we will be competitive tomorrow night in one game," Frank added.

"It’s more over 38 games, Premier League, Champions League, two cup tournaments… I think it’s also fair to say that in six years’ time, Tottenham haven’t been able to compete in all tournaments at the same time, so that’s the first step.

"We need to build something robust and strong and take it game by game."

Desire and hunger to win another trophy

Ben Davies has now completed 11 seasons at Tottenham, crowning his tenure with that Europa League win.

It was his first taste of silverware at Spurs and the defender is now keen to build on that momentum with a trophy on Wednesday night.

"A game of this magnitude to kick it off is pretty special and it’s a real test," he told TNT Sports.

"I think there’s an excitement within the group and that desire [to win a trophy] is there to do it again.

"I think we had a taste of it as a group. You could see what it meant and I think coming back in this year, there’s a real hunger to try and do something special again."
