Tottenham Hotspur went toe to toe with the European champions PSG in the UEFA Super Cup Final but came up just short.
Thomas Frank’s team looked very impressive against the French giants, but were unable to keep hold of their 2-0 lead.
Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping for dramatic improvements on last season’s 17th place finish and that looks very likely based off their display against PSG.
The Lilywhites looked very dangerous in attack against Luis Enrique’s side and that was largely thanks to one of Frank’s key summer additions.
Andreas Georgson looks to be a superb addition at Tottenham
As part of Frank’s new coaching set-up in North London, Tottenham appointed Andreas Georgson as their set-piece coach and against Paris Saint-Germain, it worked wonders.
The former Arsenal and Manchester United coach arrived in N17 this summer and his impact at Spurs was on show in the UEFA Super Cup Final.
The Lilywhites scored both of their goals from set pieces, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven netting either side of half-time.
But Tottenham looked a constant threat from dead-ball situations throughout the 90 minutes, with Kevin Danso’s long throws particularly impressing.
Destiny Udogie leaked Tottenham’s long throw-in plan and this is clearly an area in which Spurs have done a lot of work.
Jason Cundy joked about Danso’s throw-ins, but ultimately, Spurs looked menacing against the European champions in these situations.
Last season, Tottenham were really poor in set-piece situations, but this is evidently something Spurs have been working on since Frank and Georgson’s arrival.
Wayne Rooney hails Tottenham’s ‘excellent’ set pieces vs PSG
After the match, Wayne Rooney hailed Tottenham’s ‘excellent’ set pieces against Enrique’s team and said it was ‘refreshing to see in a big game’.
Speaking about set pieces, Rooney told BBC MOTD: “I think it was refreshing to see in a big game, it’s doing the basics right, you look at the amount of bodies that Spurs have put into the box. It caused PSG problems.
“This is the goal, the goalkeeper takes the free kick from the halfway line, they win the first one, they win the second and third one, and by keeping it alive, the fourth one, they get the goal.
“This is clearly something they’ve worked on again, a free kick, good movement from Romero, the goalkeeper should do better, but he puts them 2-0 up and I thought set pieces were excellent for Tottenham tonight.”
