Brentford manager Thomas Frank is set to join Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur as the north London club’s new manager following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou last week.

It’s a drop down the table for the Bees boss, with Brentford having finished seven placed above Spurs in 10th, but comes with the chance to manage in the Champions League. Postecoglou had been keen to stay in his role, teasing a third season during the club’s trophy parade last month, but that piece of silverware was not enough for Daniel Levy to forgive his club’s league woes.

Frank, who has been at Brentford since 2018, will end an impressive stay with the team. The 51-year-old has led the club to the Premier League and solidified their top flight status since debuting in the division four years ago.

Thomas Frank set to be appointed Tottenham Hotspur manager

In a fresh update on the managerial search on Monday afternoon, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano wrote: “Thomas Frank and Spurs, matter of short time and formal steps… then he will sign in as new head coach.”

Postecoglou’s dismissal will come as a blow for the Aussie, who had been keen to highlight a shift of mentality at the club under his tenure that had led to the Europa League success. Incoming boss Frank has already shared his admiration for his predecessor.

Speaking ahead of the league meeting with Spurs in January, which Tottenham won 2-0 at the Gtech, Frank said: "We were also hit very hard by injuries last year so, from that perspective, I understand the situation Ange is in now at Tottenham. When results are also not going your way, that's tough. They're things we need to deal with as managers and I'm convinced that Ange is doing that well and he will get through it.

"He doesn't need advice, but he just needs to trust his own processes and trust what he believes in, which he does - that's the main thing. When we played Tottenham away earlier this season, we played a very, very good Tottenham team - I thought they were flying. When they hit their high level, they are very hard to play against.

"I expect a game between two teams that want to attack, so it could be open at times. We need to be the team that controls an open game, which is difficult."

Frank on ‘massive respect’ for Ange Postecolgou

Frank also referenced the club’s cup success at the time and predicted that Postecoglou may champion the side to lifting a trophy. He added: "I have massive respect for Ange. Speaking for myself, it is tough at times and feels like you're carrying everything on your shoulders. It is always my final call, it's the manager who stands there. That's why I can definitely put myself in his place. He's done very well to keep going and keep believing.

"Maybe, in one of his toughest moments, they will win a trophy, which will be massive for Tottenham. It could be one of those seasons where they suffer incredibly - and maybe they suffer even more - but they win a trophy."
